05 Hemi Spark Plug Torque

So I will be changing out my spark plugs this weekend hopefully but the only problem is that I don't own a torque wrench. I know that I am supposed to torque them to 13 or 14 ft/lbs or whatever but how necessary is this? I have never done this on any other spark plug change I have done on my other cars in the past but I really dont want to mess anything up on this one. I am just replacing them with the stock Champions. Thank You.

Re: 05 Hemi Spark Plug Torque

A torque wrench is not mandatory, but nice to have. Without, tighten until "finger snug" and then tighten ~1/8 of a turn (it's not very much) and you should be good to go. Before you do the job make sure you have a good plug socket that holds the plug securely (mines magnetic) with about a 3.5-4.0 in. extension. Mine is a Gear Wrench 5/8 in. with a 3.5 in. swivel extension permanently mounted and it works great. Also, be sure you have some dielectric grease for the contact end of the boots. I also put a lilttle on the boot retaining ribs, to make them easier to come out next time. You'll see if you need that if any of the plug wires or coils are hard to remove. One last thing, I see your's is an 05, so don't overtorque the coils when you reinstall them (torque spec. is 62 in. lbs.), and make sure the plug wire boots "snap" over the plugs securely. One last thing, if you have a bunch of miles on it....say over 60K and the wires have never been changed, check the resistance of each. Rule of thumb is no more than ~10000 ohms per foot ,but they should be much less. A normal "good" wire about 3 ft. long should have a resistance of ~12000-20000 ohms. If your's are out of tolerance, consider getting the Taylor Shorty wires. I've had them on my 05 Hemi LX for over 5 years now, and they're still working great. Let us know how it goes for you.

Well it went fairly well I thought. It still took about 2 hours to complete but I was taking my time on it. I just ended up going to Harbour Freight and buying a torque wrench for $18 which seemed to work fine. I did use anti seize and dielectric grease for the plug and plug boots and just reused the old wires but will eventually get those replaced. Im still deciding if I want to go with the shorties or keep it stock. Hopefully I can increase my MPG a little by changing out those plugs... right now according to the dash display I am averaging 9.7 mpg lol... not sure how accurate that is. I also noticed when pulling the old plugs that they had some different kind of grease on them; maybe its just a different type of dielectric grease? Not sure. Anyways, here are some pics of the old plugs:

Glad it went OK for you. Judging by the rounded electrodes those old plugs are for sure history. What was the gap on some of them. That looks like the factory dielectric compound. For future reference, you should not use antiseize on NEW plugs....only if reinstalling used ones, and then just a small dab. They have it from the factory. You should be OK though since you used a torque wrench. Also be aware that using antiseize (acts as a lubricant) on the plugs gives you a higher torque than what is shown on the torque wrench. Using an extension gives you a lower torque than what is shown. Longer the extension, lower the torque. Bottom line, if you used a fairly short (minimum needed) extension your torque is probably fairly close.

Shoot I guess that's what I get for listening to the oreilly's guy telling me I needed anti seize. Yea I did use extensions on the torque wrench and some I had to use a swivel adaptor. I hope I didn't mess this up to bad...
