2005 WK 5.7L - P0520 Check Engine Code - Oil Pressure Sensor

Hello All,

Just had my my check engine light come on my 2005 GCJ 5.7 HEMI, had it scanned to find out I got the P0520 check engine code. Figuring I need a new oil pressure sensor, I sent to the parts store to buy a new one. When attemping to buy a new one, they asked if I had a oil pressure light or gauge (have a light), then they asked if I had the 1-wire sensor or 3-wire sensor. I attempted to look for the oil pressure sensor but couldnt find it, can someone help me? They gave me a diagram but that didn't help much. Does someone have an actual picture they can post on here?

Thank you.
Mike

I had to pull the skid plate and it was all i could do to get my hand in there to pull the plug! sensor needs to be removed with a deep 1-1/16" socket. its rear of the oil filter.

Thanks 4.whoa, those help a lot. Is this this accessable/visible from the top at all? Is the skid plate, just simply a couple bolts to remove? Looks like you had the more expensive 3 wire sensor, do you know if all 5.7's had the 3 wire?

Thanks again!!

There is no getting to it from the top. the skid plate has four bolts two get loosened, two come out and it slides over the loosend ones. I'd have to check the wires ,but usually the sensor differences are from having a gauge or just a light.

4.whoa,

Thanks again for the info. Do you have any tips on removing the wiring harness / clip? I tried for about an hour today with no luck. I know I have to slide the little red clip over, but after that I have no idea.

I have some pictures, but can't figure out how to upload them (and your pics show the same thing).

Thanks again,
Mike

Re: 2005 WK 5.7L - P0520 Check Engine Code - Oil Pressure Sensor

in the above pic the part of the red tab to the left the, rounded part. that is where you need to pull. I know it was a PITA. you might try using a very small flat screwdriver. once you get that pulled and you need to pull it as far as you can. it won't go all the way out but most of the way. then just waiting on info on it.you might have some luck pushing it on a little further and then pulling your own kind of wiggle it that way. just make sure you pull on the plastic part not the wires.

Re: 2005 WK 5.7L - P0520 Check Engine Code - Oil Pressure Sensor

Just replaced mine yesterday, Red tab was a major PITA to get out. Seems to me I instantly got better gas mileage then previous (mds now working correctly?), but changing the sensor may have lead to a whole new can of worms when I removed the skid plate it was caked in grease and fresh grease too. Did not smell like motor oil although my old oil sensor appreared to be leaking just a tad (could it have been a years worth of a little oil building up?) just wondering if there is that comes to mind when the front skid plate is greasy like that I am new here and looking to keep the Jeep as reliable as its been in the past year. I did not spot any leak from anywhere else now im puzzled more then before, any helps appreciated.

some shops aren't careful about making a mess when changing your oil. its very common for oil to spill from the filter and run down to and sit in the skid plate.

Re: 2005 WK 5.7L - P0520 Check Engine Code - Oil Pressure Sensor

Oil pressure readings are one of the key things the PCM uses to determine when to activate the MDS. If the readings are bogus and/or there are powertrain related DTC's showing/stored, the MDS will not activate. I got the light one time on my Hemi LX, bought a new sensor (dealer needs VIN to insure correct part), and haven't had a problem since....about a year. Still have the new sensor sitting on the shelf. Go figure.

Re: 2005 WK 5.7L - P0520 Check Engine Code - Oil Pressure Sensor

Well as I previously mentioned I think the can of worms is now open lol, As random as possible my starter took a crap on me with no warning, had it towed to a ford dealership where I bought it because I had purchased the extended warranty that covers nothing apparently (at least the tow there was free). Of course after waiting two days I get a call from the tech saying yeah we can replace the starter for $400 bucks but while its here there are a number of other things wrong.... Rack and pinion is loose, upper balljoints need to be replaced and inner tie rod is shot and they offered me the sweet deal of $3500 to replace everything including the starter, reason I ask this is because as previously stated my skid plate was covered in grease and I still dont believe it was motor oil.. My question is do anything listed above contain a grease that could leak out and on to the skid plate? I am not a complete idiot when it comes to cars but suspension and steering is something I have never even tried to mess with. Also if the rack and pinion are going to be replaced wouldnt that take care of the inner tie rods as well? Sorry if this is posted in a unrelated topic just trying to figure our what moves to make (jeeps still at the dealership about to be towed home today)

Re: 2005 WK 5.7L - P0520 Check Engine Code - Oil Pressure Sensor

CV joints are full of grease.........well they should be
what is loose on rack & pinion the mounts or the innards? I think you are right that the inner tie rod should be part of it.

don't know how you feel about doing the work yourself, but...

you can get reman rack n pinions @ rockauto for under $300

you can get whole upper control arms from rockauto for $40 each with bushings & ball joints.

starter is $90 + $30 core @ auto zone but it is a PITA to swap

I think $3500 is steep, but I do a lot of my own stuff.
