Re: 4.7 Gen Two HO cams install?

Lots of good reading here guys.

So here is a good question for us higher mileage guys. Ive got 105k on my gen1 4.7. I dont really want to sink any money in to this engine with this mileage. Id just do bolt TB, intake mani and tune to go with my CAI if i had the $.

So say tomorrow my engine craps out. Can i buy a low mileage gen 2 4.7 to swap in? What would be required to make it run? Computer? wiring harness? ???

If that was possible, Id call it good and stick to the bolt on mods, i dont need to do internal engine mods with over 300hp for my use. Id be so happy with a gen 2 4.7 and some bolt on mods. Even a stock Hemi would make me happy. (you can all tell ive never driven a 6.1L) LOL

Well i drove a 6.1 charger but i did not get above 20mph~ it was a customer car.

Re: 4.7 Gen Two HO cams install?

It would drop right in. I think your wire harness would be alright too but you would likely have to get the the TB adaptor to use your TB on the newer style intake so you can use your throttle cable.

Re: 4.7 Gen Two HO cams install?

If thats all id have to do to rock a gen2 4.7L in my 05 then id be down for that. That would be sick. I love to drive my mother in laws 2010 Ram 1500 with the gen2 4.7L. If it can haul ass in that big truck (quad cab) then it can make my jeep rip enough to keep me happy.

I might, however, it should be stated that a WK will need a custom tune to remove the EGR....Or, to attempt shoehorning a Gen 4.7 EGR unit in, as the 05-07 EGR will not fit. This is on top of the changing fuel/spark requirements.

Not sure how to answer your question. You need a custom tune for the purpose of deleting the EGR, if you dont want to be bothered running it. If you plug the EGR hole in the 08 manifold, you will trip a code for EGR.

I've made a thread in the Performance section about possibly porting a Gen 1 manifold as a cheaper and more reasonable alternative to swapping in a Gen 2 manifold. The 08+ manifold is awesome but by the time you get the manifold (150-300 bucks used or new), the adapters (300), EGR if you need it (110 or so), a tune (350 or so), wideband/datalogger (250 or more), it gets expensive very fast.

Gen 1 4.7 (99-07) Manifold Porting Feeler/Discussion

You need not a TB spacer, but a specific adapter to make it all work. Alot of people think theres a cheaper way to do it , but there really isn't.

What I told you in the previous post was more or less it, but, to my knowledge, this is what you will absolutely need to complete the install and be able to drive your truck again. Note that this is not optimal, or code-free, or any of that, but just to swap the 08+ manifold on and be able to drive your truck.

Bear in mind that I have only swapped this manifold on a WJ, NOT a WK.

You NEED at minimum the following:
08 manifold+ gasket o-rings (150-300 bucks?)
Manifold bolts+ washers (15-20 bucks?)
Air Ram adapters- (300 bucks)
Plug for EGR hole
CAI tube (factory intake will not mount up)
The manifold is capable of being run on a stock tune....but it will not be optimal. WOT AFRs on a stock JTEC PCM like in my '02 WJ were in the low to mid 13's above 4500 rpms. This is on the edge of being safe. From what I have been told about the later style (03+) NGC PCMs, they are much less resilient to modifications so you can likely expect WOT AFR to be excessively lean.
You will have codes for EGR. There may be some sort of workaround to keep the code off without using a tuner.

Ideally, to do it right, you need all of the above, plus:

08-10 EGR (Confirmed to work on Rams, no telling if it works on WKs) (110.00)
SCT Tuner (350?). Diablo is supposedly working on tuning support, no ETA yet.
Wideband AFR. 150-350.00 depending on unit.
Datalogger. http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/products/lm2.php

With stock cams I had a major flat spot from 2k-3k with the 08 manifold, but that may have been from crap tuning.

Not that I'm aware of.

I saw an honest 25whp from it. Tuning and other issues plagued my setup, so there may be room for more power. On my setup it didn't come alive until 3000 rpms.

It's a nice piece, and IMO easier than a cam/valvespring swap. It's just expensive unless you have most of the pieces already.
