4x4 with 4.7 exhaust manifold gasket

I'm new here, and I just bought an 05 GC limited with a 4.7 v8. My problem is that it has an exhaust leak on the driver's side. I can't tell if it's the flange at the head or if it's the connection to the exhaust. Does this engine have a donut at the collector? I think the hemi does, and I think the v6 has a collector flange gasket. I've looked all over the web, and I've been to lots of parts stores, and some say it has a donut, but they just happen to be out of it, and other places say it doesn't use a donut. If it's leaking at the head, it's gonna be a bitch to change. Please help.

Doug

Most likely it's leaking at a broken stud on the rear of drivers side that allowed gasket to blow out causing leak

oh joy, what would cause the stud to break off? Is that a common problem??

Very common, mainly cheap hardware causes failure

Re: 4x4 with 4.7 exhaust manifold gasket

the $25,000 question now is, how hard is it to fix? I'm a pretty seasoned mechanic, but when I look under the hood on the drivers side, I can't hardly even see the manifold, much less get to it. It doesn't look to be very accessible through the wheel well either. What's the secret?

Thanks,
Doug

You can go through the well, do a search for exhaust manifold leak and you will find a nice write up on it

Re: 4x4 with 4.7 exhaust manifold gasket

I did mine over the winter. Took a few hours but got it done. Did it through the wheel well. Had a broken stud that i had to use an extractor to get out

Is there enough room in there to get a drill, if you have to drill it out?

Re: 4x4 with 4.7 exhaust manifold gasket

Just a question.
The sound of the exhaust gasket leaking....could people be mistaken by the same noise as a lifter ticking noise?
