5.7 Cracked Exhaust Manifold, Help!!

Ughh... The first bit of bad news I have had with my WK

Was having my Super 44 installed today and the shop called me and said that they were looking for leaks and found that the left side manifold has a leak and the right side manifold gasket is toast. He said the only solution is to replace the cracked manifold, and while I'm at it it makes sense to do both manifolds & new gaskets on both.

The troubling part is that he said it required the engine to be removed on the 5.7 because there is no space. So for now untill I get some advice that won't happen. Just the super 44 install for now.

Is he right?

Also, my truck came with a 2 year warranty, one of those aftermarket warranties that are sold with used cars. I've had trouble with that sort of warranty company on my WJ, so my hopes aren't high, but anyone ever have manifolds replaced on warranty?

Please help me, please tell me it isnt going to cost me $3000...

Ugh.

What year is you WK? Also they should be able to just pull the heads with the manifolds attached. No need to pull the whole motor

2008.

Even if they pull the manifolds with the heads attached, I'm still looking at some decently big $$'s, right?

It wont be cheap. Maybe in the $1,200-$1500 range depending on the shop and everything.

Re: 5.7 Cracked Exhaust Manifold, Help!!

That's BS. This is another "shaft the customer" tactic by some shop. You don't have to remove the heads or the engine to remove the exhaust manifolds. Yes, it is tight in there, but it can be done with some difficulty. I had my custom headers built and the guy didn't have any problem removing the stock exhaust manifolds, but he said it was a real PITA to build the headers, because of the limited room. No engine removal, no head removal, no engine lifting.

If you're going to have to replace the manifolds, you may want to consider doing a little upgrade that should be worth ~10-20 hp. Here's a thread I did on it:

A better exhaust system for the 5.7 WK??

Also, FWIW, here's my thread on the header build:

Headers for my 5.7 Hemi

Re: 5.7 Cracked Exhaust Manifold, Help!!

I would try the warranty route first. Even being an 08 there is NO reason for the manifold to be cracked, that's just crazy. I have a 2010 and just swapped my stock manifolds for SRT manifolds. The shop charged me about 1200 for the swap, it was a day long job and they had to take off the tires and wheel wells and lots of stuff in the engine bay, but even considering a complete engine removal is INSANE. Find a better shop!

OP doesn't state where they live, but the exhaust manifolds are usually part of the emissions controls for a vehicle, and must be warranted by the mfgr for whatever number of miles the state requires.... if USofA.

If there is warranty available SOME dealers will work with you by them doing the labor and give you credit for the standard manifold, but allow you to pay the difference for any optional ones, or even headers.

I'm in NY. I called Jeep when I first bought the jeep to check on any open warranties and they said ALL were expired. I wonder if the emissions is separate and worth double checking?

Before I freak out I'm going to look into the warranty. But like i said, I had a warranty I got from a used car dealer on my old WJ and it was nothing less than a NIGHTMARE. My tranny died, I immediately called the warranty company, they said it was covered, they told me a list of places, so I choose a Jeep dealer, since it was listed. Jeep did a complete disassemble of tranny and transfer case to inspect, warranty company sent representative to inspect, they then said it was pre-existing and I was not covered. I had to pay over 3K out of pocket to fix the WJ and fight with my lawyer for over a year to get a 75% reimbursement from them. I am expecting the same fight now.

Re: 5.7 Cracked Exhaust Manifold, Help!!

So I had the Super 44 installed and I love it.

They found an additional leak in the metal to metal flange right before the stock muffler, so they cut that out and welded in a solid piece.

(not my truck, but this is the video that sold me on the Super 44)

I will try to get a video of the sound but I'm not sure it will do the sound justice. I have the same set-up as the first video above (Super 44 with stock resonator & tip) but it does not sound like that. It's much much deeper and mean sounding.

It's loud but not overbearing. I park in my driveway, so I did the remote start test. I could definitely hear it in my house (I could also hear the stock set-up too), it is a little louder than stock at initial start-up, but when warming up in the driveway at idle it did not seem bothersome to me or my neighbors, phew. It's fairly quiet below 2K rpm, but once you get on the gas or get above 2K it gets pretty loud.

I only did about 10 miles or so last night, not enough to see how it would sound on cruise control on the highway. But around town, red light to red light it sounds great. In my opinion it's the best sounding truck I heard last night.

So far I would highly recommend this set-up. I only paid $79 for the muffler and $110 for the install with the additional leak fix. At this point I don't think I will be cutting off the stock resonator, I don't want it louder. I will probably put a nice looking tip on though.
