Thumbs down 545RFE DIY Transmission Service... GRRR!

I did a pan drop fluid and filter changes yesterday on my 83K transmission. Went with OEM filters, because of advice on here about a valve change on one of them, and RTV. The dealer quoted me $220 for the service, but not sure if it was a drain & fill or a flush. Anyways, Mopar filters + RTV = $73; 7 bottles of Castrol Synthetic ATF+4 = $48; another $15 for misc supplies and PBR. Having to phenagle the pan up and over both the cat and crossmember while trying to avoid getting the RTV smudged or on the spin-on filter at the same time was a complete PITA. It was a janky install & I'm still keeping an eye out for leaks. I'm still a little low on the fluid level, so an 8th quart may be in the future (that's with the fluid level checking method on WK Jeeps). I put in a universal drain plug, in case I ever have to do this again, but chances are, I'll pay the dealer the extra $100 to not have to deal with the huge mess over half of my carport. I'm not sure if it was worth saving the cash, except for knowing that it was done correctly.

Congrats on your DIY I did the same service: it wasn't too trick for me, i think the cat back helped create a little "wiggle-room". I feel your pain though $220 doesnt seem bad for the effort. I quick note - they recommended 6.5 qts. I did that, but noticed stalling when coming to a stop. Now, I'm running 7, without any issue and my level is good.

^^^ remember the fluid level wiill vary some as a drain doesnt get the fluid out of the torque converter. so it will aways need to be specific for your install.

and OP, thanks for that. i wont go to the stealer as i have a place I trust but it looks as if the few extra they charge is worth it/

Re: 545RFE DIY Transmission Service... GRRR!

Anybody know of another fluid check method other than the one on WKJeeps.com? I have put in a little over 6.5 qts, but only showing barely above the cold mark @ normal operating temp. Another WKer on the JU forum said his took 8. I just don't want to overfill it.

Re: 545RFE DIY Transmission Service... GRRR!

id suggest just adding a little at a time and keeping an "eye" on how it shifts and feels. Kinda like jlewis pointed out the tranny will let you know when its not full lol. The only benefit to having it done at the dealer is they have a machine that actually flushes out the tc as well and then vacuums it all back out into the machine, then they just put back in the exact same amount that came out based on the measuring gauge on the machine. Its also the only way to get ALL of the old fluid out.

On that note if you do go to the dealer to get the tranny flush make sure you request they replace the filters as well. Most flush services only include the flush, which is kinda pointless as all the crap get left in the old filters.

Re: 545RFE DIY Transmission Service... GRRR!

We dont do trans flushes at my dealer, ANY service is dropping the pan, cleaning, replacing the filter(s), the filter seal on the rfe, reinstalling the pan, fill it up usually to the "service fill" spec then on the rack do some D-R shifts with the vehicle running, put it in neutral, check the fluid level, usually add more here, do this a couple times till your close then drive the vehicle around the block and recheck.
