545RFE Transmission Oil Change Question

They (Stealership) noticed I had a Tranny Gasket leak and asked me if I wanted it to change it. I might as well do a tranny oil change too at the same time. Problem is they want 350$, they want like 80$ for the filter alone.

Question is, should I buy the 2 filters (I think there is one spin on and the valve body filter) and gasket to save some money?

Which parts should I buy? 2 filters + gasket? Any specific brand to look for?

Thanks.

Re: 545RFE Transmission Oil Change Question

Go with teh OE filters, they wont go bad. Yes depending on the mileage. The VB filter is 30 the spin is 60k and do it all at once. You can hem and haw but it will be off and at least now after the service they can reset the CVI and be done and youll have good fluid for another 30k

Re: 545RFE Transmission Oil Change Question

Ok, hmmm thought the other brands were better than OE. I could pick them up for cheaper too at RockAuto. What about gaskets, RTV sealer, red eagle clutch packs? Thx!

Re: 545RFE Transmission Oil Change Question

I worked for corperate for 7 years, this trans is in everything from a liberty to a 3500 and they all use the same filters. If it works for a 3500 towing 15,000lbs.... im going to use that filter in my truck (had a 1500 and now the grand towing my race car). I like factory filters just like I like Factory Seals (both on the race motor and current Grand)

Re: 545RFE Transmission Oil Change Question

I thought the 545RE didn't have gaskets, but RTV only (at least from the factory)? I was aware that people sell seals for it, but I didn't think it was necessary? As a comparison, my [st]ealer wants $315 to do my tranny service, so I went to J4J and picked up the filters for like $55 and am taking it to the local guys who will do the labor/fluid (which includes ATF+4 compatible stuff) for $130 but then of course there's a discount in the paper every week for $15 off. So after tax, I'll be out $125 after tax with factory filters and ATF+4 compatible generic fluid.

Re: 545RFE Transmission Oil Change Question

When filled at the factory I think they use an orange liquid sealer (i know they do on axles) and after they tell you to use black RTV. They do sell a gasket but its not available from a cdj store.

Re: 545RFE Transmission Oil Change Question

I used all dealer Mopar fluids and black RTV. I think is cost $120 or under. Did it myself - just need some socket extensions and swivels.

Re: 545RFE Transmission Oil Change Question

I paid $300 at my dealership. That included all filters and fluid (they perform a full flush which uses around 20L of fluid. Not too bad of a price considering how much fluid is used.

Re: 545RFE Transmission Oil Change Question

when you use the process of flushing the fluid out, thats much better then just a pan drop and filter change. You still have a lot of fluid in the torque converter and cooler lines.
