Re: 6.1 swap

Glad to see you're getting closer to the end of the tunnel. Keep us posted on the outcome and some of the speed bumps and roadblocks you've enountered. Should end up somewhere near 500 hp. at the crank. Just be sure to upgrade the transmission too. Good luck and keep on modding.

Re: 6.1 swap

Biggest trouble has been getting good parts. I found a guy that was selling 6.1 heads, intake manifold, injectors, fuel rails, and oil pan/windage tray for a good deal because he switched to a boosted application. Turned out he detonated the #8 cylinder and didn't feel it was necessary to tell me, or send the promised pictures or parts. I got four injectors, head needed machine work, and nothing else was useable or just didn't arrive. Just missed the PayPal cutoff date for a claim too, I'm pretty damn salty about that one, but I guess that's on me too for trusting the guy. Bought some parts from Summit that didn't really work out too well also; they couldn't balance the crank before sending it, the balancer pulley I got had some weird metal ring pressed around the shaft I had to get pulled off, and the pushrods I got were the right box, but the wrong length exhaust rods. It's all been figured out, and nothing but good things for their customer service department, but it was still delays.

Re: 6.1 swap

I'd really like to be at or just above 550 ft-lbs, but I know it's not necessary (I am staying lifted, after all). Next step for me is selling or getting rid of parts I have and don't need, like the 6.1 intake manifold I had to sand down and wash piston bits out of, and the 5.7 stuff I'm not using, like injectors, exhaust, and the crank. Already have a guy for the heads. Transmission is definitely an area of worry for me, but after what I've already spent, what's another couple grand, right? I've heard from a friend that there are better parts to put in it from the diesel version, I've got to do some homework on making that work.

Handling is another bit I'm looking into. I've got a brake set picked out for stock calipers that should work fine, and I already have the rear SRT sway, but I think I'm going to go to the front bar as well, and get better links for both. Only hesitation I have there is winter handling, stiffer suspension tends to get squirrelly on ice, and I don't really want to run disconnected on the highway. Would love to retrofit a DHS system, but that could get intense.

6.1 swap

It's running! Well, kinda; it starts and runs as long as you keep it over 1k rpms, but the computers are fighting the mods (especially the cam) really hard. Tuning should be the last piece of the puzzle. Getting to drive it a mile or so for the first time in a year was pretty awesome. It's way too loud though.

Re: 6.1 swap

I have run into a decibel/budget issue. Now the hemi sets car alarms off when I start it. I need ideas on making this thing shut up. The current setup of a dual 3inch in/out magnaflow necked down to two 2.5in pre-axle dumps is laughably inadequate. I want to preserve the tone and flow as much as I can, but kill all the loud, and I'd like to do it before the axle, or as inexpensively as is possible going over it. The big budget idea is a magnaflow 12595 to an over axle 3.5 inch pipe and a resonator.

Re: 6.1 swap

Huge difference. Stupid strong torque band starting at 3200, I haven't really opened it all the way up yet mostly because of the break in period just ending and my fear of detonating the transmission before I have saved up enough to replace it.

Re: 6.1 swap

I can feel the transmission complaining about the torque, but it's a beast once you let it go at the top end. Shoots right up to 120, but I'm lifted and due to the weather I'm going to leave it at that until some other things get done.
