aFe or Volant w/ Gibson Exhaust?

Hi All,

I just recently purchased a 2010 S- Limited, certified preowned with 44k. I've only had it a couple days, but have been struggling to get this thing to get over 11mpg in the city. I monitor the MDS like a hawk and try to keep it on as much as possible. I was wondering if I should bring it to an outside mechanic for a tune-up, or try a CAI and Gibson exhaust, I understand it is not a prius, but i think 12-13 city is alot more common than the 10-11mpg im getting. Any input appreciated,

Re: aFe or Volant w/ Gibson Exhaust?

I got a 2008 5.7L Limited 4X4 with 40K about 3 months ago and I'm only getting 11-12mpg (city) so your not alone. I finally just stopped giving a damn about my mpg and BAM, problem solved!!!! And about getting a CAI and exhaust, save your money doesn't really help.

I'm not super concerned. I just plan on doing a superlift and some 285 70 r 17 s soon and was expecting about 10 to 11 after it was done. Now it looks like I will be seeing 8 - 9. Ouch. I'll probably go through with the Gibson exhaust anyway. Just looking for a way to make up for what I'm going to lose with the lift

CAI or Gibson catback will do nothing to improve power, in fact it will drive worse than stock with those.

Worse than stock? I figured no change in anything just sound different. I'm really leaning toward just doing my superlift perfect and then see where I sit.

Re: aFe or Volant w/ Gibson Exhaust?

The change in restriction with the exhaust will likely decrease you mpg. I noticed a SMALL increase in essentially highway only mpg with a CAI. Learn to be a bit lighter on the pedal and you should see 12-13mpg city. But living in NJ, I'll bet your city driving is a lot more stop/go than my city driving...

Re: aFe or Volant w/ Gibson Exhaust?

I'd check your spark plugs to see if those lazy dealer techs did their job or not. 44k is the time to put new ones in. Also give your transmission fluid a good look at, pull the dipstick out a few times and see if its fresh or 44k miles old. You can check the rear differential also by popping out the little plug. Should def. be fresh or near fresh. I would go with royal purple gear oil. I don't trust dealerships, they really look for people who are ignorant and take advantage. I always go about 13 mpg city/ country road beating it before my cam and stuff. Now I get 14.

Re: aFe or Volant w/ Gibson Exhaust?

A tune up might be needed, but I get better mpg's in town with the mds turned off. I get 13.5 in town with a lift and 265/70's CAI and tune. FWIW I only run 93 even before the tune.

Re: aFe or Volant w/ Gibson Exhaust?

I would clean the TB first, if you havent yet. its stupid how much that helps things. i back uphill into my garage and with just a very little "film" on the tb i had to give it gas to bump up into the garage, cleaned the TB and it idles right over like it wasnt there.

When i'm in nj I always keep it in 3rd when not on the hwy and my mpg's there went from 8-9 in "D" to 12+ in 3rd and I dont drive for mileage

Where is this info coming from?

I have the afe, gibson, and intune and I see 22-24 mpg on the highway, driving 55-60mph.

Re: aFe or Volant w/ Gibson Exhaust?

I should add that this is after a full tune up. Seafoam in oil, vac, and fuel, new plugs, taylor shorty wires, egr, map sensor, pcv valve.
