Re: Air intake shield - anyone remove it?

before i had my k&n i took mine off, ran it like that for a good few months and never had any issues. i opened my air box once in a while to check it and some bugs do get in there but i would just blow them out and close it back up.

Look into a DryCharger if you have a CAI

Re: Air intake shield - anyone remove it?

Took mine out about a year ago with no problems driving in all kinds of weather. There's also a tube in the bottom of the box. Removed that too and it opens a hole there that should get more air into the box. Does it improve performance? Prolly not but it hasn't hurt anything either.

Re: Air intake shield - anyone remove it?

I removed mine a couple months back. No noticeable difference in performance. Just a little bit more stuff gets into the intake. Wouldn't recommend doing it but i put in a CAI so it doesn't matter anymore

When you are running away from the Zombies at high speed through the deeper water, you will be glad you had that splash shield to keep the water from getting into your intake. : >)

Re: Air intake shield - anyone remove it?

Just to update. I have not had my shield on mine for over a year. Never once had any issues with water getting in. We get some very sever rain some times. Recently i drove 3 hours in the pouring rain and i check the intake box and there was not a drop of water in the box. A tiny bit of water was in the bottom of the water catch.

Also i spent this past rainy weekend at the local county fair and did some mudding with my stock wk and nothing happened either.

The biggest side effect i have with this mod is a few extra bugs in my filter.

It did make a nice difference in performance in my opinion. I have a K&N tube modified that i attached to the stock air box with a K&N panel filter and this shield removed. I am bringing in much colder air then any K&N or similar "Hot air intake" kits and it still flows really well. This added with FRP ported TB i think i have added a nice advantage to my 4.7 V8. My intake setup draws the air right from the behind the grille almost like a ram air, where as a CAI kit from the box though it may have a "heat shield" still draws in hot air from the engine bay.

Re: Air intake shield - anyone remove it?

In most cases the filter, stock or otherwise ,is in the same general location, so if water is deep enough get to your filter, your screwed either way! i dont have the stock box anymore and there isnt anything below to block the filter from much. i dont really think rain is an issue, except from the DB who has to go through deep water as fast as he can, pushing a wave over your jeep.
