Air intake shield - anyone remove it?

Was replacing my grille and noticed that there is a plastic shield over the air intake behind the grille. I am assuming this is to reduce the amount of crap that goes into the airbox. Anyone ever remove this and if so, did you notice any difference in engine performance and an increase in dirt in the airbox?

Pics of shield:

i thought about removing mine also......but there is prolly a very good reason why its there (to keep excess debris and moisture out rain/snow)

I didn't even think about keeping water out - that makes more sense. I am thinking off leaving it on and maybe add some holes to it.

Re: Air intake shield - anyone remove it?

even if it was removed i dont think we would really see any performance gain

Crestwood1001 is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Air intake shield - anyone remove it?

Its there first to keep water out, to prevent hydrolocking. And im sure it helps keep some dirt and shit out. But DO NOT remove it, your only increasing your chance of hydrolocking your engine, and on the off chance that your insurance would even cover that damage, they would see that removed and deny your claim. Plus there is absolutely no reason to remove it, you would see no gain in performance whatsoever.

Re: Air intake shield - anyone remove it?

i dont have mine in.....i have a K&N that replaces the airbox so unless my ai filter is submerged no water getting in.

but if you using the stock airbox I would keep it.

Re: Air intake shield - anyone remove it?

I left mine in. Otherwise rain and crap would have a direct route into the cone.

Re: Air intake shield - anyone remove it?

I installed a screen in my grill, so not worried about debris.
I doubt I ever go thru water that 4 ft deep.

I always want to remove it, hoping to get a ram effect to go with my K&N filter......but I am too chicken to try.

Re: Air intake shield - anyone remove it?

I ditched mine a long time ago, Its only held on with 3 plastic rivets so it would not be hard to replace if need be. It wont stop water from going in if you go in to deep water, its more for stopping bugs from going in. Rain water can get in but it will go to the rain catch that just before the air box before it gets to the filter.
