Anyone know where this leak is coming from?

Hey,

Anyone familiar with these types of leaks? See the pictures I took. It's a brownish type of liquid. Same spot like the first time I noticed it 2 weeks ago.

Not sure where it's coming from, I just snapped this picture in case I saw where it's coming from. I also did have the transmission cooler lines changed 2 months ago at the dealer for 400$. Anyone got a clue on this?

Looks like oil or power steering fluid. Based on location alone, I would say the latter. Does it smell like ps fluid (it has a much different odor compared to engine oil)?

Re: Anyone know where this leak is coming from?

Hi,

I did not smell it, however I did find my Antifreeze almost empty this morning. I filled it up and I will have to monitor that. Could it be an antifreeze leak? When Antifreeze is used up, does it change to a pink-brownish color like in the picture?

Also, I had my power steering fluid changed about 3-4 months ago. Do you think the dealer would make a hole on purpose or try some other bs?

How else can I investigate this? Should I put a pan under and collect some liquid?

According to this nice video, the location looks like it's power steering and maybe oil, and the color looks like oil.

Re: Anyone know where this leak is coming from?

It doesn't look like coolant (antifreeze) to me.

It does look more like engine oil than PS fluid (or at least clean PS fluid), but the location is more in line with a PS leak.

Collecting the fluid isn't really going to help anything at this point. Either get under it and see if you can SEE where the leak is coming from. It should be very easy to see if it is oil (from the motor) or PS fluid from the pump/lines/rack or take it in to have someone diagnose it. Smelling it would also work, but if you don't have experience with what either is supposed to smell like it's not going to help!

Re: Anyone know where this leak is coming from?

If you can spray wash that area of the engine/chassis it will help.

If you collect the fluid, drop a couple drops off your oil dipstick and PS dipstick next to it and see which one matches look, feel, and most importantly smell.

if you still can't tell, take the sample to your mechanic.

It could be antifreeze but only if it is a very slow leak and it is being cooked by heat or something.

run it for a while and get it hot, some leaks don't appear until the thing is warmed up

Re: Anyone know where this leak is coming from?

Hey there,

I just went under and again noticed the same liquid, it looks like it's coming out of the oil filter and hitting that metal bar and coming down near where the power steering fluid is that's why I think it seems like it's in the location of a power steering leak. Please see my drawing. What could this crap be now? I hope it's not something major. I also placed some white cardboard underneath, but at this point I don't know if that matters.

Well it *could* be as simple as a bad oil filter gasket. Replace it and see what happens.

Just hand tighten the oil filter, as it was probably not screwed on enough when installed and is leaking. I've never had a filter gasket go bad so it's probably loose.

Eventhough fastening the filter a bit more would be my first action as well, i did had a filter once with a damaged seal.

Re: Anyone know where this leak is coming from?

Also very possible it actually has 2 filter gaskets and that is what is causing the leak (the one on the filter and the old one that separated from the old filter...common mistake at quick lube places or when someone isn't paying attention!)

I agree with everyone above...it certainly looks like motor oil coming from the filter area so best guess would be oil from filter!
