Are Heads, Cam, and 6.1 exhaust manifold worth it on the 5.7L?

Hello all,

I have a 2005 5.7L with 115K that I picked up for a good price. So far I have done the following:

AFE intake
Shorty spark plug wires
Superchips tuner
Gibson Cat-back exhaust

I am looking for more power and torque but more in the lower range rather than upper RPM's. I could only find a couple threads about heads and cam on the 5.7. For those that have done it, do you happen to know what kind of numbers you picked up and would you do it again? Was it worth the cost?

I understand there are several companies making heads and cams for the 5.7 now. Who and what would be the top recommended set up? I am also likely to pick up a ported TB and catch can as well.

Also, would it be best to pick up the 6.1 intake manifold?

Derek

Definitely! If you get those you should upgrade either your tranny or Valve Train Body with Sharadon.

Look into InertiaMotorsports. They are great and have good products. You'll be pushing past 400+ with everything.

I know a guy with a 6.1 manifold, tb, fuel rail, injectors willing to make a deal

Thanks for the input Any idea what the 2005 5.7 put down at the wheels stock? (RWHP)?

I think it was rated 330 at the crank. So would that be at least a 100 HP gain?

For more low end, put the stock intake back on and get a Modern Muscle 85 mm CNC ported TB. I had an AFE II and it made it run worse than stock, particularly a loss of low end and throttle response, plus adding all that noise. Ported heads usually lose low end, and shift the power curve higher up. Apexi super voltage stabilizer also increased response including low end on mine.

Re: Are Heads, Cam, and 6.1 exhaust manifold worth it on the 5.7L?

I have the Inertia performance heads.... not milled... and the smallest crazy jay cam. She is def. much better.. but what I feel is limited because I think my torque converter sucks and my front diff. bushing is def going. I get 1-2 mpg better in the city. Had a KN 63 on for awhile, but actually went back to the OEM intake and she has much more low end. The SRT exhaust manifolds are great, and if you pull heads then it is easy to put them on. Just make sure you figure out the flanges... I couldn't find any that mated to them... unforetunatly I tried the magnaflow SRT8 mid pipes... which didn't fit well, rubbed the tranny. I just scrapped them and cut the flanges off them, hacked up the OE cats and made custom mid pipes... keeping them 2.5''.

She sounds badass, but I'm going to be going to a 3'' walker muffler soon to try and fly under the radar

Re: Are Heads, Cam, and 6.1 exhaust manifold worth it on the 5.7L?

The best she ever ran for me WOT.... was with those 3'' magnaflow SRT8 mid pipes, no y pipe or x pipe, dual 3'' inlet 2.5'' outlet flowmaster 50 HD, and dual exhaust with no spare tire in place. OMG, she F'ing would pull so hard from 30-90 mph.... but she threw p420 codes and had non existent low end, very rough idle, and was so loud I was embarrassed.
