Back to stock air intake

Well, I axed my KN63 air intake a week ago and went back to the stock setup. After driving for a couple hundred miles, it feels much... much... better on the low end. The only difference is that at WOT it doesn't have as much power.... feels a little choked. Since most my driving is stop and go, I need to low end much more than top end. I am getting better miles per gallon now also, likely due to the fact that I don't have to rev it as high to get her moving at stop signs.

Anyone have an aftermarket air intake that keeps the low end?

With the cam and heads I'm wondering if the stock air box is enough...

You will be able to tell if the intake is providing a restriction or not by measuring vacuum at WOT. If it is, you will see vaccum at higher rpms.

Theres more that goes into the stock intake feeling/being better than simply swapping parts. Could simply be that the stock intake better matches your current tune. It is very possible because of the cooler air provided by the air box (as opposed to an open element filter), but I'd be curious as to what datalogs would indicate.

Get an OEM SRT8 intake arm and then remove the drain collector at the bottom of the OEM airbox and use flextube to route another air passage to the front grille. Add a drop-in K&N filter and you'll be golden. There's quite a few who have went this route, and personally, I couldn't be happier.

I thought that the venturi effect only applied to liquids? I could be wrong though, as those classes were a LONG time ago.

I went back to the stock intake 6 months ago and torque and throttle response is way up over the CAI. With the ported TB, it responds much better with the stock intake than it did with the CAI, and it is nice an quiet, instead of having all that crappy intake noise.

I like my OEM SRT8 intake noise. Just enough to know it's there, but no annoying whistle.

Well I want back to stock intake on my 2005 5.7 and got better response off the line at low end, I was shocked by how better it felt and I did not reset the PCM at all. I had an AFE intake sounds great but no power off the line like I have now.The biggest thing that is not happening is the HEMI lag that I get at 40 mph, not getting it at all, the engine feels so smooth. I am getting a srt intake to see if I get the same power I feel with the intake noise. I got no tune on the engine just updated the PCM and tcm with latest factory flash from the predator. That was done year ago. I like to know who how many members are stock vs cai.

I just installed a stock SRT8 intake tube and I couldn't be happier to be honest. I don't have a tune yet on my Hemi but will soon as well as a ported TB. I mean the SRT8 intake tube is essentially the same (or seems) as the stock 5.7L (compare the shape of both next to each other) just without the bulkiness of the air box. As far as MPGs go they haven't gotten better or worse but I have noticed a slight but better throttle response in the low end and the top end. I haven't actually datalogged anything but from pure feeling its noticeable. And if I'm imagining it well at least it cleans up the engine bay quite a bit!

Looks good you need to get some Taylor short spark plug wires to clean it up, I got a set on my engine looks great I will take a picture once Iget my srt tube, I was going to get a ported tb but the new power I think I am going to wait. I read that if you are not going to add exhaust, heads and port the intake the bored tb will not help too much with a stock engines this is just what I have read.

THe MM85 mm ported TB certainly does make a big difference with a stock 5.7. and whoever said it doesnt could not possibly have one. Gains are noticable across the RPM range in both torque and HP. It takes about 15 minutes to install and you will be very pleased with the results.

Yeah I agree that the Taylor Shorties would clean the engine up way more but I got the SRT tube shipped for just $35! But the Shorties will probably be next. I do have a custom 3 inch exhaust from a shop around here in Boston which sounds pretty damn sweet. And I plan on adding (when money allows) the SRT headers down the road. We'll see I guess :)

Im currently running the k&n 63 CAI and as everyone knows I did lose low end, specifically in 2nd not so much off the line. I know have the Diablo Intune 91 tune with Performance Transmission tune and I definitely feel like whatever I lost most is back. Alot has to do with adjusting throttle and what not but Im chirping 2nd low with lift and 265/70s and full armor underneath. I am curious about the SRT8 mod, that may be something I look into. Cam, 6.1 valve train and headers are next on agenda..

Well, I got my used oem SRT8 intake and installed it to the Hemi Wow it feels great zero Throttle lag just like the stock intake that came from with my engine it just looks alot cooler looking. The numbers with dashawk are about the same maybe a little higher but not much. The engine noise is a little quite for my taste . I know the cooler temps low 70s in GA helps but no throttle lag. I am thinking that the AFE intake may just be putting to much air into the TB at lower speed causing this throttle lag. At full throttle the TB is open bigger and it can suck it in faster that is my thinking. At highway speed the AFE does feel great I have not tested the OEM SRT8 intake on highway. Here are some pics

Chris, now your bay looks just like mine including the CAI and he shorties (except mine are blue. However I retained the stock motor cover and dremeled one edge to make room for the IAT sensor on the new tube. I also opted for the more hidden look with my satin BT catch can with a L-bracket custom mount I made more in the rear.

Last, is that strut brace aftermarket? Looks a bit different than mine, and also is a different color...(Addco? SRT8?)

Thanks Brent,

The strut brace is from a SRT8 ,I could not find a good place for the catch can so I got the brace for the cc and to make the engine look cooler looking . I have a set of chrome engine covers for the spark plug wires but they got to hot and caused burning to the spark wires so I took them off it was sweet looking with them.

I couldn't find a better picture on my phone, but this is roughly what my bay looks like now (though it's not as dirty now lol).

Here's how I did my LX SRT-8 CAI and the Billet Tech. Catch Can. The CAI has an additional air inlet just below the filter, in addition to the stock (enlarged) inlet. I also use the Challenger IAT Sensor, which samples IAT from the center of the tube, as opposed to the outer portion of the tube. IAT on the highway is always at ambient.

Well you could you give us the part number for the iat. I was on the challenger forum site talking about the longer ,does iat plug into 05 iat wire harness or does it need to be modded. So does the lx srt8 cai fit perfect, What year is the srt 8 cai you got. Help member out. I like to do this mod.

Is the IAT sensor from a Challenger a 6.4 or 5.7? Also is your MDS disabled, as I would think the stock intake is better with MDS operation versus the SRT, which has no MDS.

Chris, the part number for the IAT Sensor for the 392 Challenger is: 05149279AB. It plugs right into the existing plug on my 06 WK, but DOES NOT WORK on my 05 Hemi LX. Don't know if the 05 WK is the same or not. The plugs are the only difference. My plan for the LX is to hit a junk yard and find one that works, cut it out and splice it into the LX harness. For your info. the Challenger sensor is about an inch longer than the stock units.

The LX SRT-8 airbox has to be modified to fit, because on the LX it mounts on the other side where the battery is located on our WK's. The bottom has to be cut a little (hence the larger bottom inlet) to fit the contour of the WK fender well. The mount also has to be completely modified. If you use the LX SRT-8 intake tube (I did), you'll have to plug the stock IAT Sensor hole, which is right next to the throttle body on the LX's, punch a new hole near the airbox where the stock WK sensor is located, and also extend (you can see it in the pix) the length of the tube a little. IMO, if you don't have one laying around like I did, you'd probably be better off picking up a WK SRT-8 setup. Then there's no modding and it all bolts right in. My LX SRT-8 setup came out of an 06 SRT-8 Charger, but all the early LX SRT's are the same. Hope this helps.

Why not just add a few mods. to the 5.7 engine and get power comparable to the SRT's for a fraction of the cost. Also, if you do about $100-150 worth of mods. to the transmission (plus custom Superchips shift schedules) you'll have the 545RFE working about a 100 times better than it does in stock form. I've done relatively non invasive mods. to mine that approach 100 hp. more than stock, still have MDS (get ~22-23 mpg on the highway), and it looks like the SRT (with the SRT body kit) and I custom fit the trailer hitch to the SRT bumper so I can still tow with it if need be.

It doesn't take anything away. It basically takes out overdrive and holds the gears a little longer. I run the Superchip 91 performance tune with trans app. and I drive in tow/haul mode all the time around town. Definitely use it when towing

No problem that's what the forum is for. You can switch back and forth between the tunes. If you tow a lot keep the tow tune in When your name not towing run one of the other tunes.

Ok after reading back through this thread I might put the stock intake back on and take my K&N 63 off my gen 2 4.7. I like the sound but would like more low end. When I put in on years ago I didn't have the SC tune and trans app. So we'll see how it runs. Or if I can finagle the stock box back in using the K&N intake tube.
