Catalytic converters 2008 hemi

Hey guys, I have been getting p0430 (cat low efficiency) code off an on. Lately it seems to be staying so I am looking at replacing cats.

I am thinking of going with the whole y pipe instead of having exhaust shop cut and weld.

I see a magnaflow system on summit for $570 and an eastern catalytic system on rockauto for $400 plus shipping. Looking at the pictures, magnaflow seems nicer, but then again, once it is in, Im probably not going to care what it looks like as long as it fixes my issues.

On that note, I was hoping to get some feedback from people that have had similar codes/issues. Has anyone gone through this? Have you bought one of these y pipes and installed yourself? Did it fix you CEL? Anything else I should plan to replace?

Re: Catalytic converters 2008 hemi

How many miles are on your rig? Before you go sinking mega $$$ into a new cat/Y pipe setup, be sure to check the items listed below. To do some correctly you'll need some sort of high end diagnostic scanner. I have an Autel DS708, plus my onboard MSD DashHawk (no longer sold) is capable of reading O2's. I believe an UltraGauge (under $100) does this. At a minimum, make sure your engine is in good tune, there are no intake/exhaust leaks, and find a way to read the output voltages of the O2's as indicated below. This is critical in your diagnosis, and will help narrow down where the problem lies.

- Exhaust leaks anywhere in the system (Look for leaks at the exhaust manifolds)
- Intake air leaks (Not too likely)
- Fuel injectors....is your fuel economy poor?
- Spark plugs may be faulty
- Improper ignition timing (Also not too likely)
- Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

Years ago I did a thread on O2 Sensors that may also give you some ideas:

Oxygen Sensors and Their Role in Engine Management--A Primer

Also, here is a very enlightening YouTube video that gives you the whole story on how to diagnose your DTC.

Hope this helps you a little.
