Cleaned TB on 5.7 Hemi w/ pics

So today I was bored and went over to my buddy's house and we decided to take off my throttle body and see how bad it was.

This is what 85K miles of gunk looks like:

After:

I guess this is why I NEED to get a catch can...

Re: Cleaned TB on 5.7 Hemi w/ pics

Fun isnt it ? Should really run better now. Also, reset the ecu by disconnecting the neg battery terminal for several minutes, as it will need to reset the idle. All that gunk build up will make it idle too high after it is cleaned out.

Re: Cleaned TB on 5.7 Hemi w/ pics

Yea I had the battery disconected while I was doing this. Is there anything I needed to do once I hooked the battery back up? Also, what should it be idling at?

Yep that is my next thing on my list. Im just trying to figure out which bracket I can get. I want to order the fender mount from BT but I dont know if it will fit with my engine cover on. But I definately need a CC now.

I plan on doing this to my 2009 GC and also install a catch can. I've heard that the inside of the intake manifold also gets very nasty. Is it worth the effort to remove and clean the intake manifold, or is cleaning the throttle body good enough?

Change the the PVC valve too . I cleaned my tb at oil change intervals so it does not get that bad so you can just wipe it off.

Re: Cleaned TB on 5.7 Hemi w/ pics

I pull my TB to clean it,and i clean as much of the manifold as i can reach with a rag and cleaner. I have a catch can,& clean it all regularly, just did today actually , and THEN i run sea foam to help get what i couldnt reach. I put it in through the catch can line into the mani so it can eat away at the crap down in there. Always smokes good( then runs alot better),so i know its clean'n.

Re: Cleaned TB on 5.7 Hemi w/ pics

All good and accurate comments. You can easily route the hoses so the cover will still fit. I wouldn't recommend removing the intake and cleaning it. If it's really bad, do like 4.whoa says and clean as much as you can with it installed. If it's reeeaaaalll bad, consider changing the MAP Sensor (~$25) too. At this point a new PCV Valve is a must, IMO. My guess is that you don't know when/if it's ever been changed??
