conventional vs. synthetic

well i just bought mobil 1 synthetic oil and mobil 1 filter,im just wondering if i should go throuigh with the change or not,is it really worth the 60 bucks,ive done alot of reading on this and jg members said the hemi loves the mobil 1,just looking for feedback before i make the switch,also mobil 1 filters only offers 1 size when fram and bosch etc make 2 sizes for the oil filters,im confused on this

$60?!? where did you buy it? 5qts are like $30 at walmart, i buy them 2 at a time and get the extra out of the next bottle. but anyways........ there are tons of thread on this topic on JG.

the 5qt jug was 27$ at walmart plus 2 qta at autozone 8.50 wach plus the mobil one filter 14$,ok 51$ lol sorry,i changed it and the tapping seems louder now,i dont know if its in my head or what but its irritating,its the onlt thing i hate about the hemi,ive heard other hemis and the tapping doesnt seem as loud,the tap is coming from the bottom near the tranny

save yourself some money next time and buy 2 5qt jugs and just take the extra out of the next jug.

thanks,ive never thought of that,makes to much sense,lol
have you heard of the hemi taking more than 7 qts,do you think it would quiet the tapping down?oil level seems fine three quarters of the way up on the stick

The Hemi's, especially the MDS, seem to like synthetic 5W-20 better than the comparable dino. oil. I've been running it in my 05 Hemi Lx for 7 years now (from 6000 miles on) and my 06 WK for the last 22K miles. Some experience more of the "Hemi Tick" than others, but in any case, it's nothing to worry about. Mine, with the cam and 6.1 valvetrain, makes more noise than the HT ever did, and I love it. Sounds almost like an old solid lifter cam, but not at all annoying, and you can't hear it inside the vehicle anyway.

The loud ticking noise from my 5.7 was eliminated when I replaced the EGR a couple of months ago, and it also runs better. There was no CEL. If you have 50k or more, I'd swap the EGR, and also remove clean the TB (and install a CC) if that has not been done; makes a big difference in how it runs and drives.

Synthetic is great and you really can extend the oil changes if you want. I usually use Castrol Syntec and a PureONE filter. Places like Advance Auto Parts usually have a good synthetic on sale (5 qts + filter)

Everybody has a different story. Here's mine:
I changed from dealer dino oil & MOPAR filter at 36K miles when 3yr /36K miles bumper-to-bumper warranty ran out. Switched to full synthetic 5W-20 oil (usually Castrol Syntec or Mobil-1, whichever is on sale at WalMart) and a K&N oil filter (or Mobil-1 if on sale). The 1" nut on the bottom of the K&N filter makes it much easier to change.
When I switched, the "HEMI tick" decreased significantly, the engine used less oil between changes, and there is less oil in the oil catch can. Butt dyno says engine runs smoother (whatever that means).
At 55K miles, dealer changed oil & filter when they replaced the heads, valves, etc. under warranty. They used dino oil & MOPAR filter. I noticed it immediately. For the next oil change, I went back to my normal regime and the engine returned to its quieter state.
For reference, I change the oil & filter at 5K miles. One reason is that the EVIC notification is unreliable and sometimes pops off at 2K miles. I now ignore it and trust the odometer and my observation when I check the oil and empty the oil catch can. For me, I cannot exceed 6K miles oil change interval under any circumstance because I have the lifetime powertrain warranty and need to be able to prove to Chrysler that I lived with their specified maintenance requirements. Consequently, extended oil change intervals are not an option.

The parts stores (Advance Auto, Auto Zone, O'Reilly's, etc.) run specials of 5-qts full synthetic 5W-20 oil and a Mobil-1/K&N filter for $30. Buy the 2nd 5-qt jug at WalMart for $26 (or just buy 2 sets of the "special" and then buy only a 5-qt jug of oil for the next oil change). Overall, it should cost you ~$40 per oil change if you shop wisely.

CAUTION: This advice may be worth what you paid to get it.

Continual exhaust leaking, throwing O2 sensor codes. This was MOPAR's idea, after the change of exhaust manifolds (twice) and Y-pipe did not cure the symptoms. Long story, but I ended up with an upper end overhaul at 65K miles.

This was when the dealer changed the oil and reverted to dino oil. No cost to me, but the synthetic oil and K&N filter that was drained only had 1,500 miles on them. BTW: Until the HEMI, I had never used synthetic oil before and always changed oil/filter at the mfgrs recommended mileage. With the HEMI, I do 5K miles and full synthetic because it seems to run much more efficiently (butt dyno method). I stood watch on, started up, maintained, and operated machinery all of my professional career. After a while, you begin to "feel" how the machinery is doing. I know that sounds weird, but it's the best explanation I can give.

Just bought 5W-20 Mobil-1 oil and a K&N HP-2010 filter to change oil next weekend. I'm at 4,400 miles now and should be at 5K miles next Saturday. Even so, I still have the 1K grace period before I make the mandated 6K miles maximum oil change interval. The synthetic oil is also my "safety factor".
