gearbox programming

I sometimes get into the frustrating situation like going uphill in 3rd gear, the gearbox will not change down to 2nd.

Can the limits be changed to allow this kickdown and put 2nd into the max rev limits

What do you mean? I don' know if the tuners for the V-6's allow any changes to the transmission shift schedules? Strongjeff and probably help with this.

There is not a handheld tuner out that can access the TCM in the NAG1/W5A580 transmissions.

That said, paramount performance has a tunable TCM we can get for 700$ plus core charge. You would however, need custom TCM tuning thru them for the V6. The lowest rev limits they offer is 6300 up to 6800, and guys have reported shifts at 7000. You'll destroy the valvetrain at that rpm.

The V6 will require a 6000 rpm shift point and rpm limit at no more then 6400.

Re: gearbox programming

Spoke to some tuners in Cape Town and did a test.
In 3rd gear, will not shift down if speed is above 90km/hr. In 2nd gear at 90km/hr revs are about 5200. So max 700rpm to play with, but I want to stay just below 6000rpm a this is not a racing motor.

In 2nd gear will rev out to 6000rpm if using manual shift and speed just over 100km/hr.

This means I must take note of the parameters and adjust my driving accordingly.

However, using manual shift, noticed strange occurrence in 3rd gear. Will rev clean to about 4200rpm then suddenly revs dip to 4000 before picking up again.
I want to have closer look into this, since should not be like this.

Will also contact dealer to inquire if there maybe a software update for the TCM or whatever controls transmission shifts.

The notes about TCM shift points and rev limits I provided are for the 6.1. But since we are able to use the same TCM I did say you would need a custom TCM tune for the. 3.7.

Learning the speeds at which you can down shift in manual mode is all we can do.

The dip in third is normal on the 3.7. Its the cat overtemp protection kicking in. This is due to how ridiculously long the gearing is on the 3.7. If I'm foot to the floor coming up thru the gears, I'll hit third at about 73-75 MPH, if I stay in it all the way thru, I'll hit the rev limiter for third at 124 MPH. I see the dip briefly around 80mph before it picks back up and I'll still be picking up speed as its happening.

I have the video for this too

Re: gearbox programming

thanks very insightful
It seems your Jeep pulls higher speeds in the gears than mine does.
I take it this is using the auto shift not manual shift??
