Intake manifold cleaning

Used a gallon of purple degreaser concentrate, 35 gallon tub, scalding hot tap water and soaked the manifold for an hour. Rinsed it out and then dunked it back in the tub 7 or 8 times. Sprayed some carb cleaner on a tooth brush and scrubbed each runner really good... But quickly rinsed each after applying the carb cleaner since it may not be that good for plastics. After all was said and done, I ran my hand inside the manifold and it was smooth as glass, each runner was spotless, and the tub was full of very brown water. After my third or fourth rinse the water no longer had oil floating on it as it started to pour out the intake runners. Took about 30 minutes for removal, 2 hours of soaking and cleaning, and 30 minutes installed. Total cost was $29 for the tub, degreaser, and fuel line removal donut.

Results are in... Picked up between .3 and .5 mpg on the highway mimicking a trip i did last week. Throttle response feels better... And finally have a piece of mind that my new heads won't be tainted by the old manifold. Here are some picks. One thing that I didn't like was all the dirt and grit that came out of the tub at the very end of pouring it out.. Hum... Maybe kn filters do let more dirt into your engine?!? The jeep was previously driven daily on the dustiest dirt road know to man.

I also threw in a few pics of the port job on the heads compared to the old heads.

Re: Intake manifold cleaning

Great job! I've got the SRT midpipes on the way and still looking for a good deal on the SRT manifolds. Did you notch the manifold for the EGR or did you cap it off? If you did notch it have you thrown any codes yet? Colorado does the sniff test so I have to keep the EGR. I think it was you that suggested getting the 2009 5.7L manifold gaskets since they went to the "D" shape port cutouts. You are one of the few people that I've read who have successfully completed the SRT exhaust upgrade. Great work.

Re: Intake manifold cleaning

I did notch my srt8 exhaust manifolds, I do throw a egr low flow code from time to time, but it does not affect drivability and I can get it to turn off and stay off when running my stock tune.... Seems to only throw p401 when I'm in my diablo tunes or that crappy tune inertia wrote for me. I passed the toughest emissions test in the entire country with ported heads, cam, and srt8 exhaust manifolds.... With almost a perfect emissions score. You should use the 2009 eagle 5.7 exhaust manifold gaskets, and make sure you make the notch pretty deep so you get a little more flow than I do. I finally figured out my idling issues.... My torque converter wasn't unlocking at stop signs because my fluid was a little low... So it had nothing to do with my cam, egr, or tune. Put an entire quart in and the jeep now doesn't sputter at stop signs.

Re: Intake manifold cleaning

Funny thing... I'm in the diablo 91 tune and the p401 came on a few hundred miles ago. Then, mysteriously... The check engine light just went out by itself the other day and hasn't come back on. I still think it has something to do with the mds, because the only two cylinders feeding exhaust gases into the egr would be the first two on the passenger side... And the check engine light usually comes on when I'm in mds mode. Th 2nd cylinder is the mds cylinder, and in the normal hemi setup the egr system would be fed from all 4 cylinders dumping into the log.

Re: Intake manifold cleaning

I purchased the 2009 5.7L with the D shaped ports from rockauto. I can't seem to find the ones from Eagle that you mention. I hope these will work. They already have the EGR port and additional bolt hold for me to use as a template when I drill out the 6.1 manifold.
