Re: magnaflow why pipe who as used it

Maybe none. When I had the headers built for my 5.7, I asked about high flow cats. The guy told me that all the new ones are high flow, wire spun (whatever that means) cats. and he didn't recommend changing them. I didn't and it seems to work fine. About 5 years ago I did put JBA high flows on my Hemi LX and didn't really feel any noticeable difference. If in doubt, you may want to have your local muffler shop do a backpressure check before and after the cats. They should be able to tell you if they're working efficiently.

A couple comments. If the "Y" pipe on the 4.7 is similar to the one on the 5.7 (has the cats. on it), the only choke point in the pipe was where it connected to the exhaust manifold. On the Hemi, that size was 1 5/8 in. Quite a difference between that and 3 in. When they did my headers (they have 3 in. collectors), it is now 3 in. from the collector to the tail pipe. Maybe someone more familiar with the 4.7 exhaust manifolds and "Y" pipe will chime in and say whether there is a similar restriction. If the exhaust collector is the same size as the pipe, you probably won't see any difference.

I used the magnaflow x pipe SRT8 setup on my 5.7 for awhile... it was loud and threw codes... I eventually hacked my original cats apart and welded them with 2.5 pipe and the magnaflow 2.5'' y pipe... no more codes. I have two 3'' in/out magnaflow cats if you wanna experiment with them

I have a lot of experience with the 3.7 mid pipes. They are the same as the 4.7 pipes. They are with out a doubt complete trash, the couple of pics I took show this. At first glance the pipe appears to be 2.5 inch. This is just the outer layer of a 3 layer pipe assembly. There is roughly a quarter inch of metal mesh as the second layer. The 3rd and inner most layer is 2.25 inches and runs from just past the front o2 sensors to just before the mids merge into one pipe. The cats themselves are actually a ceramic monolith construction. I am assuming the 4.7 is the same in regards to the cats. Now the 5.7 may in fact run wire spun cats but I feel that they would more likely be reserved for the srt models. I will post pics later when I dig em off my computer as reference....

Did a manifold back magnaflow system on my 5.7. Stock It's the same concentric pipe bs as the other models, and it sucks. The biggest problem with my system was that the flange on the mid pipes was completely the wrong size for anything to hook to. Not a hard fix, just zip it all off and get an adapter, and I love the result, but I wish I didn't have to still.
