I'm new to the GC i have been a wrangler owner forever. So if you could give on tip as a grand Cherokee owner it would be? Maintenance, performance, style , tricks etc. it doesn't matter your one go to move if you will. Thanks in advance I am looking forward to it

First, welcome to the forum. A good starting point to be to, at you leisure, read through some of the maintenance threads that interest you, so you get a feel for what these things are all about. That being said, here's a few of my recommendations, FWIW.

Knowing the current service/maintenance status is probably one of the most important aspects of keeping the WK's in top notch shape and not giving you unforeseen breakdowns. As with any "new to you" vehicle you should do a complete inspection and service so you are comfortable knowing everything is up to date. There are some things with the 5.7's that are more important than others, IMO. Other forum members, I am sure, will offer up many more good items too.

A complete servicing of the entire drivetrain should be first on your list....change all fluids/oils/filters in both diffs., the xfer case, transmission (especially important IMO), engine and cooling system. The Hemi needs 5W-20 oil (synthetic preferably) for the MDS to work properly. It's fairly common for oil change places to use bulk oil of the wrong weight. When I bought mine from the Jeep Dealer, they were proud to announce they had done me a favor and changed the oil for me. Only trouble was, they used 10W-30 oil so the MDS didn't work as it should. Fortunately, I knew the difference since I have another Hemi vehicle. Spark plugs are somewhat sensitive with the Hemi's too. You should run nothing but a quality copper core plug (I use NGK LZTR4A-11 Stock No. 5306 in both my Hemi's) properly gapped, and change at ~30K intervals. My 06 WK Hemi had ~48K on it when I purchased it and the plugs had never been changed. IMO, cleaning the throttle body butterfly/intake plenum and adding a catch can is a must on any Hemi powered vehicle. The PCV system on these is absolutely terrible, and can cause all kinds of issues if not properly maintained and having a catch can installed. Here's what Mike at Diablosport (the tuner folks) said about the Hemi PCV System:
"No, this is where I comment on lost power due to oil contamination in the intake tract/combustion chamber. I will assure you that after having seen as many logs of as many HEMIs as we have here at DiabloSport, not to mention the numerous HEMI vehicles we have had on our dyno for R&D, I can say, without a doubt, that the HEMI's PCV/Oil Vapor control is the worst of anything we deal with. All you have to do is pull your intake manifold to see the puddles of oil collected in there, and realize that it eventually gets in the combustion chamber, and oil don't like to burn, thus, detonation occurs.

There is no gimmick here. HEMI's have KR issues. The KR issues are 99% of the time contributed to by oil contamination in the intake charge, reducing the effective octane in the combustion chamber, and leading to a loss of performance.

Plenty of people have seen solid power gains on even stock vehicles when getting rid of an oil issue by adding a catch can that works properly."

Edit: One other thing that would be helpful is to get the PCM/TCM CALID flash files updated (mine was 4 updates behind when I bought it) to the most current available. This can be done at the dealer for ~$100+ or you can purchase one of the Diablosport Tuners, which will allow you to update the files. Thanks for the input. This is my first Hemi motor I do a lot of the work on my vehicles myself but normally the 4.0 wranglers and some old cars so this info is great. I did this same question on another forum a while ago and with it being useful to the poster it is useful to so many others. My jeep forum had like over 3000 replies and all the new members loved it as it gave them a taste of what all the veterans think is best for their new vehicle. Again thanks for the info

There are a fair number of "common" issues with the WK's, but none are earth shattering, IMO. If you're fuel economy sucks worse than normal (~12-14 mpg in town, ~15-17 mpg mixed, ~18-19 mpg highway), and you have lots of miles on it, you may want to look at the EGR Valve (~$30-50) and/or new O2 Sensors (~$120-150 for all 4) and/or new MAP Sensor (~$25-30).

If you're planning to do any serious modding (somewhat more hp.), when you do the transmission, you may want to consider adding a Sonnax Line Pressure Booster: 45RFE 545RFE Transmission Pressure Booster Sonnax 44957-LB2 45RFE 545RFE Electric Line Pressure Boost This will increase the line pressure, giving more clamping pressure to the clutch packs, thereby reducing slippage and (hopefully) prolonging transmission life. I did this on mine, and now use the Superchips Advanced Transmission Tuning Application to adjust all up/down shift schedules (timing) and torque management (shift firmness). My tranny now works completely different (much, much better) than it ever did stock, and better than the tuners' canned setups.

how can you tell what version files you have? Only the dealer or a tuner?

What kind of expertise is needed to install a Catch Can?

How do you clean the throttle body?

I thought modern spark plugs are supposed to last longer than 30K.

Sully, yes, the dealer or a Diablosport Tuner. The most current CALID files incorporate some of the TSB's that were issued for your particular vehicle, and get rid of some of the mostly minor "glitches" many of us have encountered.

Whartung, MDS is the Multi-Displacement System on the 5.7 Hemi engines. It shuts off 4 ((1, 4, 6, 7) cylinders under low load cruise conditions. When working correctly, it can incease fuel economy (at least on mine) by about 2 mpg.

KR is Knock Retard. There are knock sensors on the lower engine block on either side of the engine. These sensors detect any knock (in the old days called pinging) that is occurring and reports it to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), which in turn retards the timing until it goes away. This helps prevents engine damage.

Installing a catch can is really quite simple. Find a mounting place (I used the strut support bar over the engine) and connect the hoses to the can in series between the Positive Crankcase Valve (PCV) and the intake manifold. This will make a big difference in the amount of oil/condensation that is ingested into the intake.

On the throttle body, I'd recommend you do a search, and you should come up with numerous threads and "how to's" for cleaning it. It is also not too difficult to do, but caution and patience is important.

Modern spark plugs can and do last longer than in years gone by. Chrysler designed the 5.7 Hemi to run the best with copper core plugs, hence the 30K change cycle. The 6.1 Hemi's run platinum plugs. Some folks have had good luck with platinums in the 5.7 too, but many have had misfire issues too. The copper cores do last longer than 30K (mine had 47K on them when I bought it), but can adversely affect economy and performance if not changed in a timely manner. IMO, it's just easier to stick with the recommended change interval, and use a copper core plug. No need to set yourself up for a potential problem down the line.

ok Got my hands on a diablo intune. how do I update teh CALID files with it? And where can i get them?
