quieting down magnaflow, how?

so i had the magnaflow 22" muffler installed since my OEM muffler blew to bits at 62k. ive had it on for about 10k now, its not so bad in the cabin but outside is alittle obnoxious. my plans were to run 3" pipe from the muffler back, but im not sure if this will make it louder or quieter? my brother can hear me 2 streets over from my house.. which is prob close to a 1/2 a mile away

Re: quieting down magnaflow, how?

I have the same problem, installed a Magnaflow and now it's very loud, should have done what Scott did, straight pipe with 2 resos.

Re: quieting down magnaflow, how?

It would probably make it a little louder, and deeper.

My advice is either to install a larger body muffler or a bullet muffler in front of it to act as a reso.

I know many have had issues with interior noise (drone/resonance) but Im a little surprised that a 22" (oval body, key phrase here) magnaflow is considered loud by more than one person ??? All a matter of preference, I suppose.

Re: quieting down magnaflow, how?

IMO, FlyinRyan is right. Although mine is a 5.7, not a 4.7, it took me three tries to get mine right. In this order, I ended up with a complete 3 in. system, consisting of a 3X12 in. glasspack, a Magnaflow 14589 muffler, and finally, in the resonator position, an Xlerator AP XS1229, 3 in. muffler/resonator. Now it is just about perfect.....mellow during normal driving and a a nice throaty sound when I am on it. And, yes, it will get a little louder with age, but still well within the "wife pleasing" range.

Do you have a dual system or still the side swept? I'm looking into quieting the stock SRT system down a bit...with the headers, it's pretty loud.

Re: quieting down magnaflow, how?

Mine is a single 3 in. system and follows the path of the stock single system (now not visible and dumps in right rear), and is just a little bigger and straight through (no switchback mufflers) all the way.
