when ur referring to whatever oil is on sale, are u buying regular or synthetic oil? because i agree with going that route for buying regular oil, but with synthetic you get a difference in blends with the companies, thats why i feel its safer to stick with a particular brand when buying synthetic.
and from what i know (Google searches ), synthetic has less sludge build up over time, unlike regular oils, and that's why i go with synthetic (and pay the few extra dollars)

But i agree with Scott, the only real way to see how efficient your oil and filter actually are, is to get them tested and see if you have any contaminants and excess microns and the size of those microns that are in your oil. Because man, they can do some damage.
most filters are 40 micron filters. Some of the best "synthetic filters" are 10 micron filters and can reduce engine wear up to 50%

I only run regular dino oil in the motor anymore. IMHO, I Could never really see the benefits of synthetic in the motor (forum flame suit on ).

What I have found over the years is that motor oil going "bad" has more to do with fuel dilution and people just trying to extend the oil use to far. That's why I said to run what puts a smile on your face, but just change it once in awhile...

Nobody is going to argue that synthetic oil is better. However, the way 99% of the people drive and doing simple 5k mile changes with dino oil and a filter, the vehicle will fall apart around the motor long before you'll have an oil related motor failure.

Again, all of this is just my own personal opinion based on the driving and maintenance I've done in the past. And yes, I USED TO BE a Mobil1 synthetic fanboy....

Re: Rep your oil and filter!

Synthetics do not break down as quickly as Dino, plus the pour point is much lower; i.e., oil is thinner in cold temps, so much better with cold start ups, where most engine wear occurs.
I use valvoline synpower and K & N filters; tried RP for 2 oil changes, but will never use it again, as the hemi engine is much smother with Valvoline than RP, plus the MDS was very rough switching on and off with RP.

Went from Royal Purple to Mobile 1 to Castrol Edge. I usually use K&N oil filters too.

The Jeep HATED the rp. Mobile 1 was coo but she seems to really like the Castrol Edge. Taking her to Mammoth this weekend and am gonna hit every trail I find!! Lol

Exactly^^^ and because the oil does not break down as quickly, you do not get the common oil sludge in engines (im not saying it will destroy ur car, but you wont be getting the same gas mileage thats fersure) another plus is because synthetic oils are thinner, you get a immediate improvement in gas because the engine does not have to work as hard to pump the oil around.

yeah my jeep has a nice purr to it with Castrol edge (compared to other oils used in the past)
and dude! your gonna have a blast in mammoth! go to the local ranger office (across the street from the "mammoth rv park" on Main st.), and they can give you a free map of all the offroad tails up there. rather then buying a 20 dollar book about them (which i almost did) some of the trails are simply as a "4 mile" one way 4x4 trail, to 27 mile round trip trails. Dont forget your camera!

Yeah there are plenty of videos and articles/forums on the internet revealing how cheap frams actually are. along with how they practicaly fall apart when opened, and dont seal the two ends of filter matter together.

Wow that is the last one I will ever buy. Kinda worried that I just did a oil change and I gotta drive another 2800 on this POS oil filter.
