Yeah there are plenty of videos and articles/forums on the internet revealing how cheap frams actually are. along with how they practicaly fall apart when opened, and dont seal the two ends of filter matter together.
My best friend's dad is a DOT mechanic and witnessed a Wix rep do the Fram dissection demo in person. I haven't used a Fram for 13 years now. FYI... The Napa Gold filters are manufactured by Wix and my 5.7 Hemi uses the same model filter as my TJ 4.0.

Re: Rep your oil and filter!

The mopar filters are (from my understanding) made from a wide range of manufacturers. Some are Wix, Fram, Purolator, etc., all dependent on the model and when it was manufactured.

Most likely whoever comes in with the cheapest bid at the time...

Any of you guys ever spend the time and cut some filters open yourselves to draw your own conclusions? Or just repeat what you "read off the web" or "heard from someone"?
Anyone ever have their used oil sampled?
Just curious.

Re: Rep your oil and filter!

I've sent my oil out for analysis on a few occasions through Blackstone labs. Well spent $20 or so if you ask me.

Quick question? Exactly what did the analysis determine for you? Synthetic or Dino? Really curious as to the specific tests conducted and results? Were you able to come to a conclusion as to a preferred oil and filter? Thanks for any specifics.

They are that simple and they do work that well. The lever to open it spring loaded and "locks" into position. It takes quite a bit of effort to lift the lever and swing it to the side to open it. If you want some added insurance, they also sell a safety lock that makes it impossible for it to open. If you're hitting something hard enough to break this open, it would do the same to your existing plug, or probably just put a hole in your drain pan. These are some husky valves.

The analysis really has nothing to do with helping you determine what kind of oil or filter to use. It's intention is to gauge engine wear based on trace metals found in the oil. When you send in the sample, you include what kind of oil, how long it's been in there, the type of motor, the mileage, etc. Based on that information and the sample, they tell you if they are finding an unsafe amount of specific metals. That tells you if you have a bearing or ring on it's way out, if you have a lot of "dirt" in the motor, and if your oil has broken down or if it could have been run longer. Think of it as a blood test for your engine. They can do the same with your transmission. The report includes information on amount of fuel, water, magnesium, lead, copper, iron, etc found in the sample and then gives you a human translation of what it all means. They make it a point to not "recommend" an oil. Not that there is some secret, but I think it's more about condition than brand or type.

I run Royal Purple with a K&N oil filter. I don't drive THAT much, so changing it at every 3500 miles for me is maybe 2-3 times annually. Every report tells me I should run it longer, but I sleep better changing it, so I do.

I have 2 analysis saved...one from my current Jeep, and one from my previous XJ (used the same oil and filter in that). The analysis actually helped sell the XJ. The buyer was thrilled to see the analysis and had never heard of something like that before. If you'd like, PM me your e-mail address and I can attach them and send them to you so you can see what it looks like and what kind of info you'd get for your $$.

Mine doesn't stick out past the OEM engine skid, even with the nipple.
