Re: Royal Purple

Thanks MT are you saying that you use RP?
Thanks Milous so far it's sounding like this RP will be coming out like now.

I've been running the Mobil 1 Extended performance for about 30K miles on my 05 GC 4.7L, with 115K miles on it. I never pushed it for 15K miles, I had been doing 10K with a filter change at 5K miles until I got back the results from Blackstone Labs for the 2nd oil change that that I did with M1 EP. Here is the narrative from Blackstone,

This engine doesn't look quite as good as it has in the past. Iron increased quite a bit and that likely shows wear at steel parts like rotating shafts or cylinders. Silicon is a little high, so maybe excess dirt has accelerated wear a little. And the longer oil change interval likely plays a part too. Check the air filter just in case silicon is dirt, though we're not sure this small amount of silicon would have affected iron this much. Note sodium. We're guessing it's harmless oil additive from a previous oil, but maybe it's coolant. Watch for coolant loss and check back.

I was running a K&N air filter but have since removed it and my coolant level was fine. I am still running the M1 EP but have cut it back to 5K miles and will be sending the next change out for analysis. I do most city driving with a once a month highway trip to my in-laws, about 160 miles.

Re: Royal Purple

I've never had an issue with RP. I don't use it in the WK2 yet.( I've got free oil changes for the first 3 yrs.) I've used it in all of my cars and change it every 6K miles.

Re: Royal Purple

I never understood why people spend more money just to extend the interval between oil changes. I've always figured that the folks who design the engines know what's best for them. They specify the grade of oil necessary and the recommended interval.

I know a lot of folks like Mobil-1 and other synthetics, and I doubt they hurt. My current vehicle is an Acura MDX. The owners manual says there is no need for synthetics, but you can use them. They further say that you should still change the oil when the computer calls for it. Since that would be the same for dino or synth, I really see no point in spending the extra money. Acura/Honda engines have a very good longevity record, and I would guess that most folks aren't buying anything more than necessary when it comes to oil.

It's just my opinion, but the best thing all these fancy products have going for them is their adverstising departments.

Re: Royal Purple

FWIW I've been using amsoil for a while now and the WJ seems to love it. I've been using their extended life which they say is good for 10k miles or 6 months. I tend to run about 6k miles in 6 months so thats when I've been changing it. No signs of any problems and my oil still looks good when drained. Also, after reviewing a lab study online I switched my diffs from RP to amsoil. Both were overall good oils in the study but RP was severely lacking in cold flow compared to the amsoil severe gear. Living in MN I decided it was worth the change, and with shipping it still cost slightly less than buying RP at the local store.

Re: Royal Purple

That's because the service manuals are rated for conventional oil mainly or regular synthetic. They mainly make you change the oil because eventually overtime it breaks down or creates sludge which is bad for the engine. Mobil 1 extended is designed not to break down so easily and remain good for a long time. Its not the same formula as regular oil so you wouldn't have to change it like it says in the service manual.

Re: Royal Purple

Thanks everyone for your thoughts I went with the Mobil One extended release for now. The engine seems quieter upon start up, and while warming up to me anyway.

Re: Royal Purple

I use Royal Purple Fully Synthetic motor oil in my Jeep Grand CHerokee Laredo 4.7 L V-8. I also use their extended performance oil filter as well. I change my oil every 5k miles due to the amount of driving i do. I travel the highway alot (commute). I have never ahd a problem with it. Ive been using Fully Synthetic motor oils for about 10 years now in all my cars. New cars and older cars. But i recently switched to Royal Purple about 2 years ago.

Re: Royal Purple

Buy 4 quarts. That will cover both front and rear.
