Re: Side Exhaust + Shorty Headers Project

After Thursday night, Friday night, and Saturday until 3:30 pm ive been working on this thing! I've pretty much put it all back together but have cut off half off the cat back. I cut it right where the 2 exhuast banks join, so at the moment i have no muffler at all. Its loud but not terribly so. I could drive it this way for while until i figure out what im doing next. I did find somone with a stock SRT Jeep Manifold for sale. Do we have confirmation that this has ever been done before? I dont want to have to go though all this again for nothing!!

Re: Side Exhaust + Shorty Headers Project

Ive started reading up on the stock SRT8 manifolds. Do they have the opening for the EGR on the passenger side? It appears they do not...

Im not sure about that.

Here's a pic of my current system until i get this all figured out. It's pretty loud but it's not too bad. Should be fine for a while

Re: Side Exhaust + Shorty Headers Project

Ok the Jeep SRT Manifolds are on the way. I just remembered i have an extra 2.5" X-pipe in my garage so im hoping i can incorporate that into all of this. Here are the 2 layouts. The sheet metal for the side skirt should be done today, so hopefully i can finish all of it this weekend. I bought a rivet gun yesterday for the wheel wells and side skirts, ordered SRT gaskets today... Man i need to write all this down

Re: Side Exhaust + Shorty Headers Project

Yes keep us informed about it, im really interest in install new headers, but i was searching in forums that there are only custom made (special order) by American Racing Header, that are 1,500 bugs its insane, i will be happy only route them to my magnaflow catback system.

Re: Side Exhaust + Shorty Headers Project

In your diagram, the left side doesnt have a post cat o2 sensor... but the right side has 2?

I thought there were a total of 6 o2 sensors?

Best of luck, i would scratch the x pipe though, more work

Re: Side Exhaust + Shorty Headers Project

Im pretty sure there are only 4 sensors. The 2 pre cat sensors help the engine adjust it's air fuel mixture, while the Post cat O2 sensors basically just monitor the exhaust to see if the cats are working. So in theory as long as both post cat O2 sensors read post cat exhaust i shouldnt throw a code. Main reason i have the 2 next to each other is i wont need to get an O2 sensor cable extension as that is right where the stock sensors are located.

I checked on the x pipe. It would fit right in front of the tranny oil pan where the current stock cat is, however this would create the need for 4) 90degree bends for each side of the exhaust which would likely defeat the purpose. So yea i'll prob forget the x pipe and may consider running 1) crossover pipe to act like a big H-pipe, but we'll see.

Im going with the gaskets for the 6.1L. It is my belief that the D shape ports are bigger than the 5.7L square ports, so if i used the 5.7L gaskets, there would be spots of the gasket with no support behind them which could over time break off and get into the cats.

Im finally installing my oil catch can tonight. Between than and blocking off the EGR i should have a pretty clean intake from here on out

Re: Side Exhaust + Shorty Headers Project

I picked up the 6.1 gaskets tonight. Here you can see them on top of the 5.7 gaskets and appear bigger all around. Im happy to see i should have a nice flat seal on the egr port.
