Throttle Body Cleaning

My 2005 Jeep has really slow acceleration. I read that cleaning the throttle body should help. How do I go about this? I saw some videos of guys spraying seafoam while the engine is running...is this the best way? By the way I am pretty much a noob at car repair....thanks!

Re: Throttle Body Cleaning

Take off the intake resonator box, then you got the throttle body exposed. Some people take off the throttle body, otherwise get a toothbrush and some cleaner. Open the butterfly valve to get behind it and clean that as well

Re: Throttle Body Cleaning

What engine do you have? What's the mileage? Maybe it's time for a tune up? Check your air filter also it might need replacing!

Re: Throttle Body Cleaning

seafoam while its running then use a vacuum hose and feed the seafoam until the engine almost dies and play with it till it sucks up a third of the bottle. Let the engine die, let it sit then start it up.

Throttle body cleaning is when the engine is off.

Re: Throttle Body Cleaning

Its a 4.7 V6 with 65k....I dont know why but doing this makes me nervous. Is it possible to really cause any damage? As far as the tune up I have replaced the plugs, air filter, and I bought a PCV valve today to replace. I just bought it and want to get it running nice. Thanks guys!

Re: Throttle Body Cleaning

if its a 4.7L then it is a v8...V6 is a 3.7L

Re: Throttle Body Cleaning

The throttle body shouldn't be cleaned according to wk jeeps and lots of owners. That said you can do it, just need to watch for getting sprays and stuff on the electronics. From my experience and 50k miles or so, the TB doesnt get dirty enough to affect anything. The whole unit is replaced as an assembly if its defective. If your under warranty have them look at it if need be? But honestly, cleaning it will not do a thing.

If you think you are running rough (computer will know before you and throw a code) some better options are to check your plugs/injectors. Also check out the EGR, common failure on all WK Jeeps and causes a bad idle. Also a fluid swap on the entire Jeep does some good. I did all mine when the oil came up. Just hack her up and do the oil, front/rear diffs, tcase and trans. They go together in sets and use same fluids. (diffs 75W140) (trans - any good ATF+4) - engine 5W30. Beyond this stuff there isn't much you can do. Like I said the computer will tell you everything you want to know if there is an issue. So if not, I wouldn't touch your TB, can only do unnecessary damage. GL

Re: Throttle Body Cleaning

I actually read that earlier as well and was going to ask. It isnt really running rough, just has terrible acceleration. It may just be bc it is a heavy vehicle with a V6. You are right about all the fluid though.....Ill have to decide if I should tackle those myself or take them in...would you advise a rookie to tackle them?
