Transmission Over Temp Message 4.7 WK

2006 4.7 WK just got a message for the first time "transmission over temp" in dash/evac. I stopped to go into a store and check the tranny oil temp and it was in the hot zone on the stick.

2 nights ago I tried to boost a friend's car and had it charging his battery for around 10 minutes.

Any ideas? Some say corrosion around starter wires/connectors, others change their starters and others have their computers rebooted and updated.

Re: Transmission Over Temp Message 4.7 WK

Since no WK guy jumps in, i will give it a try.
See this thread: 2007 Laredo Transmission Overtemp
How is the battery on your jeep?
By the way, how did you check the transmission temp? Or did you mean the level?

Hey!

Battery was changed in 2010. I just looked at the level of the transmission oil by taking out the dipstick and noticed it was in the zone lettered hot....probably did not check it right ...jeep was parked and not started. Engine was hot though, I had been running some errands. Tranny fluid was nice pink light transparent color, changed it last year. Night before I gave a long boost to a friend.

Re: Transmission Over Temp Message 4.7 WK

I also installed a new water pump last month. What about faulty wiring due to heating in engine? A lot of that wiring seems to have gotten through some times.

Re: Transmission Over Temp Message 4.7 WK

Found this in Page 238 of the Grand Cherokee 2005-2010 manual (actually 2006)
258 STARTING AND OPERATING NOTE: If the vehicle is started in extremely cold temperatures, the transmission may not shift into Overdrive and will automatically select the most desirable gear for operation at this temperature. Normal operation will resume when the transmission fluid temperature has risen to a suitable level. Refer also to the Note under torque converter clutch, later in this section. During cold temperature operation you may notice delayed upshifts depending on engine and transmission temperature. This feature improves the warm up time of the engine and transmission. If the transmission temperature gets extremely hot, the transmission will automatically select the most desirable gear for operation at this temperature. If the transmission temperature becomes hot enough, the "TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP" message may display and the transmission may downshift out of Overdrive until the transmission cools down. After cooldown, the transmission will resume normal operation. In high ambient temperatures with sustained high engine speed and load, an upshift followed shortly thereafter by a downshift may occur. This is a normal part of the overheat protection strategy when operating in the "Tow/Haul" mode. The transmission will downshift from Overdrive to the most desirable gear if the accelerator pedal is fully depressed at vehicle speeds above approximately 35 mph (56 km/h). When To Use "TOW/HAUL" Mode - If Equipped When driving in hilly areas, towing a trailer, carrying a heavy load, etc., and frequent transmission shifting occurs, press the "TOW/HAUL" button. This will improve performance and reduce the potential for transmission.

Re: Transmission Over Temp Message 4.7 WK

Donīt know which transmission is in your jeep, but normally the fluid level is checked with the engine running.
If it has the 5-45RFE transmission, then the temperature sensor is inside the TRS/solenoid block inside the transmission.
Did the message come back again? When you charged your friends battery, was your engine on? If not, your battery voltage probably went down quite a bit and could have caused the message.

Re: Transmission Over Temp Message 4.7 WK

Deaelr said it's nothing, I have to go meet the transmission guy there tomorrow morning. It's as if it's stuck in 3rd or 4th gear, it revs at 1500 rpm which is ok, but louder than usual drive noise at 100kmh. It may need a CPU restart I say because ever since the heavy boost I gave the day before this started, may have caused or drained some electrical crap. Fix your electrcical crap Jeep lol, if you want me to buy a new Cherokee in 5 years.

Did the message return again? 1500 rpm at around 100Km/h seems to be ok.

It comes on every time now, especially if I drive it for too long or on the highway after 10 miles it will show up.
