Re: Brakes locked up!

Update:- Dealer has phoned to say that the issue is with the rear drum brake for the handbrake. Apparently the vehicle has disc and drum brakes on the rear. I ad no idea it had two types of braking on the rear.

The drum is inside the rotor. It is the emergency brake and is cable operated

Re: Brakes locked up!

I have never had an issue with rear brakes so not even sure if I have had a car previously with the combination brakes.

Glad to hear they found the problem.

And thanks for the education!

Re: Brakes locked up!

all 4 wheel disk brakes have the emergency brake inside the rear rotor ( that i am aware of) . they are wee little pads , not like the old drum brake pads that were 7" or so long . these are only , maybe 3 " long and 1.5 -2" wide .

I will post a pic if I can find one.

Re: Brakes locked up!

If you look at the top right part of this picture , you can see the drum pads #29

Re: Brakes locked up!

SHould only be the rear wheels. Front brakes don't have e-brake. Look at the diagram closely, they are only on the rears. Overly tight drum brakes in the old days was caused by backing up out of the driveway/parking spot frequently and aways the same direction. Backing up and braking could cause the self adjuster to tighten, and going the same direction (backing up to the left for example) would only apply wear to the opposite side eventually causing tightness. Generally it did not affect long distance commuters, but rather people who drive short distances often. I am not as familiar with newer brakes because they need less maintenance, but the idea should still be the same.

That's just my theory.

Re: Brakes locked up!

check for dc codes... I had this problem and it turned out to be the rear speed sensor. $8.00 fix if you do it yourself. Pull the abs module connection and see if this allows you to drive as normal. Speedometer and other things may not work but you should be able to get get it somewhere.

Re: Brakes locked up!

It was the parking brake as one of the shoes had come off.
