Cannot remove strut bolt from lower control arm.

I am trying to get my strut removed from my WK to replace the struts, but I cannot get that strut bolt to budge. I removed the nut from the opposite side and lowered the control arm but i am either not sure what to do next because I can't just pull it out and it will not back out either. Any advice?

Re: Cannot remove strut bolt from lower control arm.

I am pretty sure I just have to pull that out, but sure isn't budging. I have tried a number of things short of heating it up. I have not yet resorted to beating the hell out of it. Is there some kind of balance I need to get with the control arm and the jack at a certain height?

Re: Cannot remove strut bolt from lower control arm.

that sir - is the infamous "Clevis Bolt" - i'm not sure how to get that out, but good luck. I worked around it On the side - what are you trying to do? If you simply want to replace the struts, you dont "have" to remove that.

Oh really? What is it I am missing then? I am actually replacing the struts and installing a lift kit spacer.

Re: Cannot remove strut bolt from lower control arm.

If I don't have to deal with this I am all about getting around that. Now I am trying to get the upper bolt to move but that won't even budge for anything I throw at it. I have soaked them all in PB Blaster again and will give it another go tomorrow. I wasn't even supposed to start on this until tomorrow.

Where exactly are you stuck, broski? If you're just replacing struts, then undo the upper ball joint, sway end-links, upper strut mount bolts(4) and drop everything. Loosen the lower strut-clamp bolt and replace the strut, obviously need a spring compressor. You should be good! I've had a few Jack n Cokes, so let me know if I'm not understanding correctly

Did this on another thread, hope it helps:

Re: Cannot remove strut bolt from lower control arm.

The clevis bolt will not budge so there is a bolt on the upper part of the fork (the lower strut clamp bolt I believe?). I can't even get that nut to break up. I assume I am going to have to remove this bolt at the minimum in order to get the strut swapped. I gave up for the evening about an hour ago so hopefully tomorrow will bring better luck. I have the upper ball joint free as well. It was either this clevis bolt or the lower strut clamp bolt. I have tried both but I haven't put full effort into it yet. Just figured I would get started on this tonight instead of tomorrow.

Re: Cannot remove strut bolt from lower control arm.

It's rusted inside that sleeve. They can be a real bear to remove. Just keep on keepen on.
Luckily I did mine with only 15k miles on it.

Re: Cannot remove strut bolt from lower control arm.

I may just be confused by the process now but I assume I will have to loosen this bolt to get the strut out. Well that sob isn't budging either. And as far as the clevis bolt goes, it is difficult to get a grip on that head.

Re: Cannot remove strut bolt from lower control arm.

^^That's correct - that should be the only bolt of concern. Hit it with some PB Blaster - maybe bang on it a little - to loosen it. I did mine around 66K and it wasnt terrible.

Re: Cannot remove strut bolt from lower control arm.

When I did mine I took the entire assembly off the vehicle before I tried to tackle that strut cradle "clamp" bolt you're showing in the last picture. I can't remember exactly how it all went, but don't be afraid to smack the back side of that clevis bolt with a 3lb sledge to get it started. Use a block of wood so you don't damage the threads. Once it gets started use the threads to your advantage and back it out with a wrench. I remember it being a little rough, but it wasn't as bad as you're saying, you might need to lift on the strut assembly to take some weight off the clevis threads. The bolt in that cradle clamp was by far the hardest to loosen for me.
