I just bought a 2010 5.7L WK with QDII on it. I didn't know that the suspension on it was as tight as it is, as I figured that with 4x4 and the ground-clearance, it was engineered to articulate, as well, but as I bottom the suspension out over the speed bumps that my Z06 and 370Z easily cleared, I am discovering that this was probably similar to the SRT8, made only for the highway, and a smooth one at that!
I have already put Bilstein 4600's on it, but they are just getting dented up from the suspension bottoming out. I had hoped they would provide more ability.
Anyway, I might just get a Subaru or something, although I love this vehicle, I do live in an apartment complex with speed bumps, and was planning on some mild off-road (gravel driveway, etc.) but I can see now that maybe the GJC isn't up to the task. Would like some opinions on it before I do anything drastic, though!
I need an OFF-ROAD! capable vehicle. The 18" rims and lack of "trail-rated" badge should have acted as a clue that this was smooth-sailing only (Limited w/optional rims aren't trail-rated and maybe they have a highway-only suspension, skidplates just for show/because they are on the other jeeps and the 18" package comes later on down the assy. line or something? It certainly is incapable of articulating over ANYTHING that would come near the skidplate, so I am at a loss, there!), but hey, live and learn...so how can I fix it (if it can be)! If not, I have heard good things about the Subaru Forester, and know people with them. They are definitely more off-road oriented than my Jeep, for sure, but I wanted the V8, and American, and so here I am, angling over speed-bumps just like in my Z06, lol!
Anyway, do I need a lift kit? 4 or 6"? I need to have the suspension articulate enough to clear about a 4" speed-bump, at the bare minimum. Will the lift-kit give me articulation, or just ground-clearance? Ground-clearance isn't the issue. It's the fact that when the suspension moves, it beats the shocks into the axles because of how close packed everything is up front and how little range of motion it has---about 1 inch. Also, cost??
This reminds me of traction-bars on my 1988 mustang 5.0. I took them off pretty fast! Dunno how this can be modded out, though. Need it to have enough to get me to/from work in the city at LEAST, though!
