Re: Lower or lift?

255 is the width in millimeters. You need the sidewall ratio as well to know if they'll fit. Most people don't know how tire sizes work. Take 255/55/17 for example. 255 mm is approximately 10.04 inches wide. Then you take the sidewall ratio of 55. To figure out the sidewall size in mm, multiply 255 by .55. That gives you 140.25 mm or 5.52 in. Multiply that by 2 to get the top and bottom of the sidewall (11.04 inches) and add it to the wheel size. This gets you an overall wheel height of 28.04 inches. So, the question, in theory, would be: "Will a tire size of 28.04" by 10.04" fit my Jeep?" Use your sidewall ratio and figure it out. I don't know what WKs have for stock size tires but compare whatever that works out to be with whatever your new tires are and that'll tell you if they're close. If they're off, they still may fit. I can't help you there though. I can tell you that you'll need to correct your speedometer if you install a wheel that's more than an inch different size wise.

Re: Lower or lift?

29.03" vs 30.05". You're looking at an inch bigger with the tires you wan to put on. I'd imagine they'll fit but I'm sure some WK guru can chime in on that one.

Re: Lower or lift?

personally i would leave it stock, throw a set of SRT springs in the rear to level it or throw a strut spacer on the front to level the front with the rear. throw a set of reps or another 20" rim on there with a nice size tire to absorb the rough roads as well as provide a decent sidewall for curb rash and your urge to ride over a curb.

currently im rocking a BB and im debating going back around stock height with a set of reps.

Re: Lower or lift?

I just put on some HD bilsteins shocks and struts and I love it! It gave me a minimal lift ~ 1" (only because I replaced old worn out shocks and struts) and the ride is so much better! Just put some chunky tires and get bilsteins, maybe some springs too if you want a bit taller ride (or a little shorter but not a slammed look).

If you're worried about a rough ride and hitting curbs don't slam it. But if you can't modify it for off road then don't lift it.

Just keep it looking clean with a smooth ride.

Re: Lower or lift?

What's a smooth ride? Lol. 4"+ on short arms and I've forgotten what it's like.

Re: Lower or lift?

If my ZJ was strictly a daily driver, not also a weekend wheeler, I would have definitely kept it stock, maybe even just kept the budget boost I had. Nothing is going to ride as good as stock did for me until I get long arms. That won't be for a while though. But for a daily, and nothing but regular street driving, you're probably better of keeping it stock. You won't stress other components like steering components, you won't hurt your MPGs, you'll maintain a decent ride quality (not a dump truck like ride like mine), and you won't spend all that money on a lift/drop and want to change it in the future. Once you start modding, you get the itch to keep modding. It's a pretty unrelenting itch.
