Lug Nuts for WK with WK2 OEM Jeep Wheels

Problem / concern is lug nuts seating and integrity. Yes the og 17" lugs fit but really cause concern with performance/safety based on looks (puny). The lugs that came with the 18's are are larger than the 17's (hex & thread 15/16 vs 13/16 on hex).

I'd like to use the OEM 18 lugs and the hex isnt the problem its the threading. references have both the WK & WK2'S listed at 1/2" but the WK2's are bigger and wont thread on the 25 mm Eibach spacers im using. Maybe the seller of the 18's gave me the wrong lugs?

Even though 17's don't look like right will they be safe?

Anybody running OEM WK2 20's have the same problem?

Would replacing the bolts on the spacers be the answer? if possible, who what and where?

Any ideas on where to purchase 1/2 lugs with the larger hex i.e. 15/16 that are 1.5 in length?

Found some Gorilla brand that have a 7/8 hex but are 2" in length - i'm looking for 1.5

Gorilla Automotive 96187SS Duplex Acorn Stainless Steel Lifetime Lug Nuts (1/2" Thread Size) : Amazon.com : Automotive

Not looking for pretty just don't want the wheels to fall off! Any advice help is appreciated!

stock lugs should be 1/2"x20. Go to a parts shop and have them check the diameter and threads per inch for each type of lug. In the mean time use the lug that fits at the proper torque if you drive on those wheels. The larger lug maybe the wrong size or maybe it was crossthreaded and damaged. Have you tried a different lug or two? I'm not sure if the smaller lugs are "safe." Is the conical shape the same size on both types of lugs? That is the part that seats into the wheel and holds it in place. Do you have a trusted mechanic you can call?

Re: Lug Nuts for WK with WK2 OEM Jeep Wheels

My initial thoughts were/are that the the 2011 Jeeps use a larger diameter bolt and lug. Yes Ive tried several. Thats my concern "safety". The cones are the same and they seat fine but as you can see from the pics there is no lip / overlap on the lugs from my 17's

Re: Lug Nuts for WK with WK2 OEM Jeep Wheels

I also installed 18" WK wheels on my 09 this weekend. I'm coming from 18" Chrome clads. but I did reuse my stock lug nuts. Everything seems to be great but you have me curious. Also running 265/60/18 tires with 1" wheel spacers which provide a good fit. I see no way to run without spacers except with maybe a much smaller tire.

Back to your question....in looking at your pics I don't think the "lip" or collar that is on the WK lug looks to come into play. In you pic the wear patterns that show look to stop well short of where the lip/collar is on the lug nut. In looking at your pics the wear area on both lug nuts seem to be equal in size. It may just look that way in the pic but can you compare that area or measure and get back?

Thanks

Mike

hmmm...seems you and I are cut from the same cloth..Jeep looks sweet!

Where the stock lugs from chromes similar in size to my ronin's?

Agree on your points. The lug size difference is a little unnerving but they do seat and hold the wheel on. Will check the wear and reply.

Yes my lugs look to be the same as yours.. see pic

Look forward to seeing your ride with the new wheels. Looks like you found a polished version...yes?

Re: Lug Nuts for WK with WK2 OEM Jeep Wheels

did you guys figure out what lugs to use?

panerai = i didn't want to put the stock lugs on the wk2 18's bc it looks like they aren't on the outside rim. have they held up?

Re: Lug Nuts for WK with WK2 OEM Jeep Wheels

yes joe and i are were stumped about this last night. I was trying to replace my stock 17" wk wheels with some nice new 18" wk2 wheels but the lug nuts scared me on how they fit inside the wk2 wheel

My continued thought is if you look at the pics above of the lug nuts side by side the "wear" area looks to be the same. The ring or lip on the new bigger lug nut never comes into play (cosmetic only maybe) and I don't think you would want it to. If it did then how would you torque the wheel? The Lip would bottom out during the seating process in my mind.

Interesting dilemma but with the WK2 wheels and the WK lugs mine seat and torque fine. I am of course open to what I may be over looking..

Re: Lug Nuts for WK with WK2 OEM Jeep Wheels

my worry is whether or not the lugnut is gripping enough threads? did your's get 3-5 threads? with the 18's did you need spacers? was there any rubbing? front or back?

Re: Lug Nuts for WK with WK2 OEM Jeep Wheels

spoke to a porsche tech (best friend) and my uncle (races across country in race car m3) they said DO NOT DO THIS. the lug's wall should be on the outside of the rim! i showed them the pics via email and they said that is not safe at all.

their solution was to buy the studs from the wk2 and see if they fit on the wk, so you can use the wk2 lugs.

good luck to all who have done this and kept it like that.
