New Member needs help with wheels

My name is Jim Shane, I live in Meridian, Idaho and I have never owned a Jeep, or any other 4 wd vehicle in my life. I am 70 years old, retired, and spending time doing wildlife photography ( www.photobyjimshane.com). To get to some of the wildlife I need to go off -road and/or on low quality roads so I bought a 2007 GC Overland. So far, so good! I want to have a set of home/street wheels and tires as well as an off-road set. I want to put the off road tires on the OE 17 inch wheels. I have the opportunity to buy a set of 5 take-off wheels/tires from a 2012 Wrangler for the "home" set. The wheels are the 18 in. "Gladiators" with the OE Bridgestone 255 R-70 RH-s tires. Are there problems with this idea or is this a bolt on. According to the wheel book the wheels have the identical offset and bolt pattern. Any help and advice is appreciated.

These wheels fit fine. Your front brake caliper should clear by less than an 1/8". It's close, but I've never had any rubbing issues. Also the offset should be wider. WK wheels usually have an offset of +50.9. The Gladiator Sahara Wheel has an offset of +44.45 as I recall. The offsets are stamped into the backs of the wheels if you want to double check.

I run 255/55 r18 to match the stock diameter of the original tires. The 255/70 will be a taller tire, so you might want to be aware to that.

here is some light reading relating to tire sizes that people run. You'll notice that lifts and spacers are not necessarily needed to run a larger tire.

255/75r17 on WK

Thank you, Bob. You are correct on the backset of the Wrangler wheel being 44.45 and the offset on my stock wheels is 50.8. Have you actually mounted these wheels on your WK? From your post it sounds as though you have.

Hello Bob;
I mounted the Wrangler wheels today and the clearance to the brake calipers is as small as you had mentioned. I tried to put the 5th wheel/tire in the spare hole and is does not fit. For now I will drive around with the smaller 17 inch wheel and tire for a spare. In an emergency, how long can I get away with driving with a mismatched wheel tire combination? Is it better on the front or the back? The total difference in size is quite dramatic. Any advice is appreciated.

You should never drive with a mismatched wheels/tires any longer than it takes to get home or to the mechanic. Unlike a doughnut tire, a full size spare will not fail after 50 miles of use, however the size difference (and even the tread pattern of the different brand tire) will cause unequal traction. DRIVE SAFELY WHILE USING ANY MISMATCHED TIRE. In dry conditions at safe speeds you should be fine, but under evasive maneuvers, panic braking, slippery corners or anything else that might be thrown at you unexpectedly this could be a problem. I once spun out in a car in light rain because I had one mismatched tire--it caused oversteer in a slippery corner. That mismatched tire was on the rear. That having been said, I have heard that its best to have your best matching tires up front, because if you can't steer you have no control. I haven't test that, but for a while America's tires was running test video demonstrating this. Based on that logic, I guess I'd want the spare on the rear???

Now, since you have an Overland you must have a tow hitch right? Time to do some measuring. Your larger spare should fit (you'll need to measure your tire height and then the actual space of where the spare tire sits). However you may need to remove the hitch and/or remount it so that it sits flush on the inside of the spare tire hole. I believe a user called Omelet did this for his off road Grand cherokee so he could carry a larger spare. The bolts that hold the hitch on are rather long and take up a lot of potential space for the spare. I think that would be your long term plan. I can find the link for the user who did this if you need help.

BTW, I run directional tires, so my spare doesn't match my regular tires either. Distance should not be a problem, but be cautious of other drivers and road conditions when you do this. I speak from experience.

Omelet's Build Thread!

Half way into this thread I found the hitch mod. He stuffed a 255/75 r17's, very similar to your 255/70 r18's in size, by removing the hitch. He later cut the hitch down and reinstalled it using carriage bolts. If you don't need to tow, removing the hitch should be easy, as it just unbolts off.

Hello Bob;
First I want to thank you for sticking with me and providing all this great information. I went to Omelet's Build Thread and found the section on removing the hitch. I have no problem here because I don't tow anything. When I first tried to get the large spare in the hole it appeared I could make it work if the hitch was gone. At the time I did not feel like taking the bumper off to get to the bolt heads. It seems like I will need to make this mod if I want to carry the proper spare. I learned that the guy I bought the wheels/tires from (or the dealer he bought them from) had scavenged out the TPMS sensors. Any advice on the best source for a set of four of these (I plan to put smoother street tires on the stock wheels for trips with my wife.) Many of the locals naysayers I have talked to (A Firestone Dealer today) tell me that this larger wheel/tire combo will play havoc with the electronic systems in the transmission, etc. etc. Can you point me to some information that I can read (or watch) to re-assure myself that this is a wise modification?

Expect to pay $200. I've seen lower online. I'm sure the dealer will charge higher. Call your local tire shops or search online and have a local tire shop install them. As for larger tires, a purist will always tell you don't mod your vehicle because that's not what the manufacturer intended. That been said, if you get the speedo recalibrated by the dealer your transmission will be happy (RPMS vs speed for shift points). If you have the hemi, you should have enough torque I don't think the motor or tranny will really care, but your speedo will be incorrect until adjusted. Usually larger tires are harder on the brakes and wheel bearings. You may need a little more distance to bring it to a stop, the pads might wear out faster, rotors could warp or in the brake reservoir & power booster might be over strained, wearing out faster or even failing at a bad time. That being said, LOTS of Jeep owners put big tires on. The naysayers are not wrong, but if you are educated in what you are doing and maintain your vehicle well you should be ok. Use common sense in your actions. When you begin to mod stuff, people can give you advice but there are no guarantees, because you are in uncharted territory. If I was you, I'd find other users on this web site, like Omelet and ask him if he's had any problems with brakes or tranny? If you are really concerned, but like the wheels, get a tire size close to stock. I originally had 245/60 r18 from the factory. I went to 255/55 r18 (the sahara wheels give an extra 1/4" which makes it easy). Both tires are about the same size. Good luck, post what you decide to do...
