Re: Nitrogen Filled Tires

I haven't noticed any difference from my personal experience with it. That being said, my experience is limited. I called tirerack.com on this query about a year ago and they said it was a gimmick. I called in several times and asked different tire tech support guys. They haven't failed me yet

Re: Nitrogen Filled Tires

Let it be known, the air your breathing as you read my post is made up of something like 78% nitrogen (google "composition of air" for sweet pie charts )... so your paying a premium for MAYBE 15% more nitrogen, because its not like the air in the tire is evacuated to make room for pure nitrogen.

The 2 benefits are:
1. Nitrogen has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion, so less pressure fluctuation with tire temperature changes.
2. Diffusion coefficent of nitrogen is less than oxygen, so less loss through tire wall.

If it's free, take it. For $20, I pass and use the little air compressor in my garage. This Heep has the premium tire pressure monitor, so it's easy to monitor (everything except the spare).

The point here is that yes, nitrogen has some positives to it. BUT its not like your tire is gonna be filled with 100 percent nitrogen, and if your paying to add it you must have deeper pockets then me

Re: Nitrogen Filled Tires

Are you drag racing, where every thousandth counts? If you answered no, save your money and just put normal air in your tires If you ask me (I know you didn't lol) there will always be a new latest and greatest, and that is how business grows and people continue to feed off the gullible consumers of our culture. Stay smart, stay thrifty. Thats my mind-set when it comes to "new and awesome" things that really arent that awesome when you stop and think about what it actually is. But then again I'm not in a financial position where dollars don't count until they being to reach 3 digits

Re: Nitrogen Filled Tires

I tried N2, but just purged all 4 tires and filled with regular air. It seemed like my pressures increased more than with air. I took a three hour trip last month and had almost double digit increases. It worked good in the winter, but the idea of running N2 came from the fact that 80% of the cars in America have underinflated tires having a negative affect on fuel economy. N2 should decrease the amount of gases that tend to leak out of tires because the molecules are larger than O2. The atmosphere is like 70% N2 anyways. But if you just check your pressure at least once a month, N2 really has no other benefit. Plus it's a PITA to find. I work at a welding supply/equipment shop so I experimented with it since February, after a bunch of motorcycle and drag/track racing guys raved about it. They said the pressures stayed the same after heating up, but my research found otherwise.
