I don't know what "high prices" you all are talking about. I've had nitrogen inflated tires for about 4 years now and never paid for it. TireDiscounters only uses nitrogen and will even do a "drain & fill" for free.
That being said, the only noticeable difference I've seen is the consistency. It still varies with heat, but in the winter, my tires stay within 1-2 psi even on the coldest days. And that's what the "better MPG" shenanigans are, once it's filled, you normally don't have to check it or add to it. Properly inflated tires just work better, it doesn't matter what's in them.
