rim/tires

Hey everyone,
I had two threads recently, one about wheel options and the other about suspension options. I recently put the 2" rough country lift of my 06 GC Overland. I upgraded to Bilstein shocks and struts, installed the addco rear swaybar and energy suspension bar mounts, and just put airbags in the rear to help with towing heavy loads.
I wanted to share with all of you my selection of rims. I ordered 5 Mamba MR1 rims in black. I will take pictures of them very soon and post them up here. I thought you all might be interested since they look pretty cool and are under $200 each.
The next step is to order 5 new tire pressure sensors and get BFG All Terrain A/T KO 265/70-17's. Hopefully this will happen within a week or so. The obstacles I am faced with now are 1) hoping the tire shop installs the TPMS without damaging the valve sensors, 2) having the deal adjust the speedo and program the spare tire sensor without any issues, and 3) modifications to fit the larger tires.
I will most likely have to do the pinch weld mod and maybe trim the hitch mount to fit the spare...I will report back as I move along. Feel free to give me advice or ask about my work so far.

Thanks, James

Re: rim/tires

FWIW - my 265/70/17's rub the slightest bit at full lock in reverse with my OME HD. I have been wheelin a few times and haven't noticed any issues with rubbing. I would give it some time - put the WK to the test a time or two and see if you have any issues before doing the pw. As far as the rear hitch - I have a half tread Nitto Terra Grappler 265/70/17 in the spare well. I keep it at about 10 psi and carry a portable compressor. I haven't tried fitting it in there full of air - but I did have to mod the rear hitch. It's tight but it works and clears the rear tracbar easily. I chopped off the xtra threads flush with the hitch nuts and took off about 1/2-3/4" of the square hitch tubing on that inboard side. The hitch mod is easy - takes about an hour with a good cut-off blade and angle grinder. You'll need to disco the wiring harness to move it out of the way on the inboard side in order to get to the bolt/s on the driverside. Just be careful with the tool if that's what you use and go back over your cuts with a heavy grit sanding/smoothing disk - then a coat of rustoleum.
Piece-o-cake. Good luck.

Re: rim/tires

Thanks for the info...i was already planning on having to do the pinch weld mod and the hitch mod. I cant keep an under-inflated tire as a spare because my TPMS will cry out the "spare low pressure" non-stop.
The only issue I have with the pinch weld mods that I've seen on this forum is that I don't like the way the patch job on the fender liner looks. I was wondering if anyone has tried to heat the plastic with a heat gun and form it to the right shape. Not sure if it can be done but I may try it.
I will take pictures of the rims tonight and post them tomorrow. I should be getting tires this weekend so I will post pics of them mounted as well next week.

Re: rim/tires

I have 3 pictures of the rims...they are not the best quality, but I will take more pics when they are all mounted up. One thing that surprised me about these rims is that although the offset is more aggresive than stock, I didn't expect the face of the rim to be as concave as it is. I assumed the hub section would be thicker. If anyone has a questions about these rims feel free to ask, I will report back when the rubber is mounted.

Re: rim/tires

What is the BS on those? Stock is 6.25" I think, so those look like 4.75 or 5 something? They are gonna look bad a$$ when you get them on! I really like those blacked out Mambas. Pics when you get em mounted.

Re: rim/tires

Backspace is 4.75", and I will be getting the tires mounted this weekend. I will post more pics early next week. I am probably going to do the pinch weld mod and hitch mod before i put em on the jeep so completed pictures won't be till later next week.

Re: rim/tires

Wheels look great! I considered grabbing a set of those myself but decided to stay with stockers for the winter.

(Went ahead and moved this to wheels/tires section)

Re: rim/tires

Painted Stockers don't look bad, I just really hate the plastic cladding. I picked up the wheels last night but it was late and dark so I'll take pics of them tonight. I had them mounted white wall in. I noticed a few things about the wheels that I will mention when I post the pics.

Re: rim/tires

Mamba MR1 with BFG 265/70-R17

The rims are very dirty...
The pic below shows how concave the rims are:

The pic below is very intersting...the lip on the stock rims sticks out about 1/4" from the tire bead, but with the mambas the tire sticks out about 1/4". See below:

As you can see below the backs of the spokes are not completely painted. Also, it takes quite a bit of weight to balance these big tires.

And the last picture below shows how the inner paint (not as much clear coat) scratched when they were mounting the tires. All 5 rims were scratched exactly the same.

I Hope these pics help some of you make decisions about what rims/tires to get. I will probably be mounting these on my jeep with weekend and will post pictures as soon as I can.

Re: rim/tires

I figured while I'm posting pics of the wheels I might as well post the pics I have from when I did the suspension:

Bilstein shock VS stock:

Addco rear swaybar VS stock:

Energy Suspension Greasable Polyurethane rear sway bar bushing VS stock:

Re: rim/tires

I started the Pinch Weld Mod today, but didn't trim the fender liner yet because I'm not sure how I want to patch it. I put the wheels on, the Dorman TPMS sensors from Amazon are working, and the wheels do rub during turning. They rub when I turn the steering wheel about 270 degrees either way, not even close to full lock. Anyway, I posted some pics below of what I did.

Part of the Overland package is extra sound deadening.

Its basically just a bag with stuffing in it that tucks into the fender:

I used a cutoff tool to slice the pinch weld and trim the part near the sensor (the top tab is ground down). The sensor mounts behind the weld and I wasn't sure if the seam would interfere with the sensor mount after being folded over. Not sure if it was necessary but didn't take long.

This is how much I sliced it:

Cleaned and spray painted the area, just used what I had lying around:

This is what it looks like after being folded down and painted:

Below is kind of an ugly picture, but you can see the two screws for the sensor...the tab closest to the screw has been shaved down by almost 1/4". If I didn't shave it down it would probably have made it hard to mount the sensor:

I hope these pictures help people get through this mod...its very easy to do and doesn't take long at all. I will post pics of the liner mod when I figure out how I am going to do it.
Thanks for reading, James

Now for the wheels on the Jeep! My Jeep and the wheels are both very dirty right now, but here are a few pics for now:
