Re: Rotors and Pads - R1 or other??

the Bendix titaniums are a low, low dust pad...and not ceramic. I used them on my Jeep before the brembo conversion

Awww yeah baby!! Not enough time stopping them but I "set" the pads and they feel amazing...plus with the new nittos the stoppage is sweet. I will post updates as I have to drive 3k miles in the next 3 weeks. Thanks everyone for their help

Re: Rotors and Pads - R1 or other??

Wow I really like these thermoquiets. They hardly put out any dust...just did 100 miles mixed driving and no dust, especially in the rears which tend to give off the most. I will keep updating this thread...

Re: Rotors and Pads - R1 or other??

Hi Guys, Interesting thread with multiple views .. I am looking to upgrade the brakes on my GC 2009 5.7 (currently the lame stock which has been replaced once, 'skimmed' twice already and still squeaks and wobbles). Based on the thread and my location here are the options available:

1) EBC 3GD (dimpled/slotted) rotors (part #s GD7285 / GD7286) + EBC Redstuff pads (ceramic)

2) Stillen Cross drilled sports rotors (Part #s JEE 2200 / JEE 2201) + Wagner ThermoQuiet (Ceramic) - seems to be a popular option here.

3) otto-zimmermann Formula Z cross drilled rotors (not sure yet if they make the right size, but :
"In contrast to the fully cast-iron brake disc, the friction ring (cast iron) and hub (aluminum alloy) are connected by steel pins. The resulting, floating construction reduces the thermal buffering of the friction ring in the operating temperature state substantially, because the friction ring can freely expand under thermal stress (e.g. when braking from high speeds or several consecutive brake applications). The use of the above mentioned aluminium alloy also considerably reduces the unsprung masses on the vehicle." - have mailed them to see if they have the right size. My local contact claims they are unbeaten unless you go AP or Brembo.

Application: Most driving is done on highway (high speed) and traffic jams are frequent so have to brake from 86 mph down to nothing relatively quickly. Also temperature here is an issue the ambient temperature throughout the summer is over 100 degrees F, so disks dont get any chance to cool here. Due to driving conditions and the general high speeds down to gridlock Stock mopar rotors suffer severely, I had to change the first front set after 10k!

There is no supply of R1 here in Dubai, and shipping these without a local supplier aint cheap! (shipping costs nearly as much as price of the products!).

Any advice on the above combos much appreciated, I am leaning towards option 2 as the price seems more reasonable than the EBC (option 3 still under investigation).

Give me a brake

Re: Rotors and Pads - R1 or other??

Ok, so I will bring the Rotors down to the Stillen option (Drilled). Now for the pads, Wagner vs Hawks .. ?

Hey 08Hemi,

I am looking at getting a set of r1 rotors I like to know how they are holding up how many miles on them and if you got any rust in the holes and slots if you could take some pictures that would be great. I ordered thermoquiet pads too, also did you do any break in of the breaks or just started using them? Is there a certain way to install the rotors or do they go on one way.

Thanks

Chris

Re: Rotors and Pads - R1 or other??

Rather than start a new post...

Last weekend I installed R1 Premium Blank Rotors and Wagner Thermo Quiets. The OEM pads were suffering from fade during mountain driving, turns out the pads were nearly worn off in the rear and the fronts were down to 50% or less. Lucky for me the everything arrived the same day the rear rotor began to grind. Never ran out of pad before...

Anyways, the new brakes work fine. I'm still bedding the brakes, so I haven't really tested them, so I haven't decided if they are the same as OEM or better, but I'm happy so far.

When I was talking to Steve at R1, he assured me that the Premium Rotors are more heavy duty than OEM. So I since the rotors appear to be the same as OEM in size and dimensions, I decided to weigh them to see if the R1 rotors were heavier. My assumption is that High Carbon steel will weigh more. The only down side to this theory is that the OEM rotors are obviously worn, so they have a little less metal than when new.

R1 Premium blank rotor OE replacement
Front 22.84 lbs, Rear 17.59 lbs
Worn OEM rotors
Front 22.11 lbs, Rear 16.94 lbs

In each case the R1 rotors are approximately 0.7 lbs (11 oz.) more. So that leads me to wonder...

a)The R1 premium metal is denser?
b)The R1 Premium casting is slightly different, using more metal?
c)The original OEM rotors have lost that much weight during their service life?

Anyone got a good theory?

Re: Rotors and Pads - R1 or other??

Update: I am @360 miles since install and the pads now feel bedded. I plan to continue bedding them till 500, but I am impressed with how quickly the brakes broke in. I'm not sure they are better than OEM yet, as I have yet to push them to their limit, but so far I am happy with the Wagner thermo quiets and R1 Blank rotors.
