Sounds like my wheel bearing is on it's way out. Need some help.

My 2005 5.7 Limited has 112,000 miles on it. It's lifted 2" with 1.5" spacers. I've recently changed the transfer case fluid (about 1000 miles ago) just to throw that out.

It started to whine when I would make left turns and go away when making right turns. The sound is very prominent at 40-60mph and it now whines when I make both left and right turns. From what I've read on here it sounds like the wheel bearing is the issue. I haven't yet jacked it up to see if there's play in the wheels (I will though).

I saw a DIY to change the rear bearings. My question, is there a write-up to do the front? If it's anything like the rear, it's within my wrenching capability.

If you have anymore insight to help me out that would me much appreciated

Thanks!

Certainly sounds like it could be wheel bearings.

The front come as a sealed assembly (you replace the entire wheel hub). The process is fairly straightforward if everything plays nice:

1) Remove wheels
2) Remove brake calipers
3) Remove caliper adapter
4) Remove the o-ring
5) Remove rotor
6) Remove wheel speed sensor nut, then the sensor
7) Remove the hub bearing mounting bolts from the back side of the steering knuckle.
8) Remove the hub.

Goes back together in the reverse order. Sounds easy enough, but with that many miles, there are plenty of points where things may be seized making it a much more difficult job.

Damnnn! Look at you, a mod on here now! Awesome. Thanks, I'll let you know when I get it. Gotta figure out which wheel it is.

Luckily, I've replaced my wheel speed sensors a few months ago so maybe they will come out easy. Those things get like glued it there! I had to drill my old ones out.

Thanks!

I would replace them in pairs. If one has gone, the other is likely to follow.

That being said, if you are now hearing the noise when turning in both directions, it sounds like both are shot already. Wheel bearings typically only make noise when loaded...so, it sounds like you started out with just 1 bad (since it only made noises when turning in a certain direction), but now both are bad (since it makes a noise regardless of turning direction).

Ah I see what you're saying. Damn, well looks like I'll be replacing both of them.

Thanks for the heads up!
