Thump/clunking sound only when going over bumps..

Here is what's going on with my recently purchased WK 06 - When ever I go over bumps I hear a sound that seems to be coming from the front right side (wheel area) and it makes a 'thumping', 'clunking' sound, it almost gives you the impression the front strut is 'loose'. Like I said, it only does it when going over a bump or pothole. My Jeep rides smooth, there is no play or vibration in the wheel, no clicking or any other noises when the steering wheel is turned. If it was not for the sound I described, you would not suspect anything. I just want to be cautious because I just bought this WK!

I took a look and everything looked great! (Sway bar bushings appeared good too) Everything appeared to be in excellent condition, almost new. If anyone has an idea of what may going on, I'd love to hear your input! Yes, I know it's hard to say without actually seeing my Jeep.

Thanks again for taking the time to read this and trying to help me out.

Re: Thump/clunking sound only when going over bumps..

Upgrade the struts from the horrid OEM ones. Depending on how many/little miles you have and what year your WK is, they might be blown. Mine sounded like they bottomed out on each bump after 30k miles. Throw in a set of Monroes or Bilsteins. You won't regret it.

Re: Thump/clunking sound only when going over bumps..

The clunk could be worn sway bar end links, or the brake caliper rattling if it is higher pitched. You cannot tell from inspection, and have to remove the endlink from the vehicle to see the wear on the mounting holes which get enlarged. Mine were all shot at 40k, and most of my miles are HWY.

Re: Thump/clunking sound only when going over bumps..

Also, I noticed something about the sway links, try to follow me here- The top part of the sway link had a bolt with a nut securing the top part. Now on the bottom of the sway link, it looks like there is a bolt securing the bottom of the sway ling, but when I reach my hand behind it, it feels like there is no nut holding the bottom bolt. I checked the other side and it's the same deal. Does the bottom bolt 'thread' into something, to where a nut is not required?

Re: Thump/clunking sound only when going over bumps..

How many miles are on your WK?

Everything posted so far could very well be the culprit. Im leaning towards the tie rod ends or sway bar links. I've been in a WK with 80k making similar noises your describing and after replacing the struts and shocks the noise was still there.

I would start with the sway bar end links and report back to us.

58,200 miles. Tie rod ends look and feel great.

Re: Thump/clunking sound only when going over bumps..

With 58k miles, the end links are shot, as mine were gone at 40k. The clunk is from the backlash created when the mounting holes get gouged out. I got mine from Rockauto for about $30 ea... get the metal ones; they also sell cheapo ones using plastic ball joints.

Re: Thump/clunking sound only when going over bumps..

UPDATE- Problem Solved!

I replaced the sway links and sway bushings. It now drives like a new one. It's so nice to have it so quiet when going over bumps and potholes. Thanks Jeep friends!!!!!!

Re: Thump/clunking sound only when going over bumps..

good to hear. At some point soon I'm going to have to replace the same and see if it helps me with the same clunking and clicking in the front post lift. did you have a shop replace, a dealer or do it yourself? how much would something like this cost in parts and labor?

I normally would have done this, but I paid a shop to do it (Belle Tire) since I'm still recovering from a sprained knee. The total was $230.00 out the door. (Would have been $250, but I had a $20 coupon)

Parts- $160.38
X2 Moog sway links/front
x2 Moog sway bushings/front
x2 Sway Brackets

Labor- $60.00
Tax-$9.62

Also came with a 12 mo/12000 mile warranty

I could of bought the parts myself for a lot less, but it was worth it to me, to have a quiet ride and let my knee heal for another few weeks.

Re: Thump/clunking sound only when going over bumps..

understandable.. in the spring i am going to replace struts and shocks.. so i will have the shop that will do my struts take a look at the bushings and links all up front and they will most likely aka (hopefully) give me a discounted price since I've given them business in the past and am friendly with them as well as them already doing the struts. good luck with the knee healing.

While you have everything apart you should replace all of the rubber spring isolators and both front strut mounts. Rock Auto sells them cheap, they too are made by Moog. My brother and i changed all of his out on his '07 with 90k and the original isolators looked as thin as paper compared to the Moogs.

I literally just ordered a pair of Moog Front Sway Links from RockAuto... only cost $46 shipped!
