Funny audio issue

for quite a while now I have been running a single channel-dual subwoofer setup in my 05 with REC head unit / BA system. I recently upgraded to an RER head unit with a lock pick, and now the subs are acting funny. I have the input to the amp coming from the rear door speakers, and its been working great this way for two years, but now I'm getting power but no noticeable sound and barely any vibration out of the subs. All the stock speakers sound great, balance/fade/equalizer all seems to work fine, but no matter how much i turn up the bass, or the rear speakers, or do the opposite, I get essentially nothing. funny part (to me) about this whole thing is that when i turn the balance all the way left OR right, the subs sound just like they used to. I'm stumped. No idea where to start. tried to use the forum search function and realized i don't even know what to search for. Anyone else have any ideas?

I think I have it figured out. The crossover distribution on the new head unit put much more bass up front than to the rear, so I switched from pulling audio signal from the rear to the front. Not sure if my reasoning is right, but it worked.
