Need some help on my thoughts about adding a sub to factory system.

Hello all!

I have a 2005 Limited with the RAQ radio. I have already upgraded the speakers and amp with the Kicker Audio Upgrade components. I was wanting to add a JL Stealthbox and power it with a JL JX500/1D amplifier. The JX500/1D comes with a High-Level Input connector that connects right to the amp.

My thought was to add the Stealthbox and let it handle the bass, and then use the door speakers to handle mids and highs. The question I am having is is it possible with the setup I was going to do? The only EQ I will have is on the HU, meaning that if I turn down the bass (for the door speakers) won't I also be turning down the signal to the amp?

I will be getting the remote bass control for the amp as well. If I turn down the bass on the HU, will I be able to just turn up the gain and bass knob and still have a clean sound?

I am not sure if I have explained everything that well but I hope you get what I am asking.

Basically I want to have the door speakers handle mids and highs, and the Stealthbox handle the bass.

Thanks for any help!

Sounds like what I did... HU equalizer controls my subs bass, withought affecting my mid speaker bass (too much). Here's what I did.....

Removed panel to get to the amp.
Tap into right rear and left rear speaker wires AFTER the amp.
Run these leads to your high level inputs on subs amp.
Connect rest of amp (power, switch, and sub) as usual.

Now for your HU...
BEFORE sub is turned on, adjust your HU equalizers bass to the range that you want your mid speakers to perform.
Now turn on sub and amp, adjust your amps input level and gain to desired settings.
Viola! You're done!

This setting will not let you control ONLY your sub with the HU equalizer, but you will find that turning up the bass with the equalizer has BIG affects on the sub, but minimal affects on the mid range speakers. Hope this helps.

just as a template, I set my equalizers bass to -2, adjusted my amps sub to a balanced level of in-cabin bass. When I turn my bass up to +2, or even just zero, my sub hits MUCH harder... yet is hardly noticeable on my mid range speakers.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the response. This is kind of what I was thinking would happen. It should work but my only concern is if someone else (passenger) adjusts the bass on the HU and blows up the sub.

Haha Thats why I established the "co-pilot law".... You can only touch the radio if I declare you the co-pilot, meaning that you understand the rules of the radio ( ie: the songs I like, and the settings I prefer) my lady is a pro now

I can also tell you... power and ground a quality sub properly, and you would have a hard time ever blowing it... You will blow a fuze way before that happens, a $2 fix at most.

made my day! i've got the same rule except they are the DJ. Nothing is worse than when a guy thinks he has good taste in music and demands control of the ipod......... my wife is starting to like my music now too!
