Question New audio system upgrade - Questions

Hello,

I have an 05 wk and have a few questions about the system I want to install.
currently I have installed the alpine pdx-f4 100w x 4.

My main problem is I want to maintain use of the 3.5 inch dash speakers and keep them on the same channel as the front two components. The system I have in mind is as follows:

Door speakers: Kicker KS6.2 75w RMS comes with the woofer and tweeter with crossover

Dash speaker: JL Audio TR350-CXi 2-Way 3.5"

Since the door speakers are 75 w and the dash speakers are 25 w that means it would be 100 watts. Perfect for the amplifier right?

Now to make all this work I was looking at the Audiopipe 3 way crossover. Which has 3 inputs: woofer(door speaker), mid range(3.5 dash speaker), and tweeter ( mounted on the door above the woofer)

This system in theory seems like it would work quite well, but I am still confused a little bit.

What's your advice? Really look forward to posting pictures and write-ups.

Thanks

My WK

Re: New audio system upgrade - Questions

What do you have for the stock system - boston or build in amplifier? Are you planning a head unit upgrade?

Do you already have the PDX hooked up or that's just what you're planning to do?

Re: New audio system upgrade - Questions

Right now my jeep has stock speakers with alpine double din head unit INA W910. Alpine m500 mono amp with Rockford Fosgate p2 subwoofer. Second battery wired in parallel with the first gives more power to total system. 2400 amps In total.

I just finished installing the pdx-f4 to power, remote and ground. Just need speakers to finish the system

Re: New audio system upgrade - Questions

Ok, you have gone the easier way of upgrading the system by avoiding the stock head unit and any factory amp. I don't know much about 3rd party crossovers, but it sounds like your thought process is pretty logical.

I just finished upgrading my Boston system to an Alpine system with the PDX4.100 and it was a pain to mess around with which wires to tap and the factory crossover for those dash speakers. IF you can control which sounds go to each speaker through a 3 way crossover, it sounds like it should work just fine. The only think I would watch is the ohm rating for all speakers involved and the total load on the amp. If you're within the recommended range (probably 2-4 ohm) you should be just fine.

Re: New audio system upgrade - Questions

Another thought, if it were my Jeep, I would look at upgrading the speakers so they are the same brand or even the same product line. Meshing different brands could get some weird sounds (some warm, some tinny, etc.) out of them. Just my two pennies...

Re: New audio system upgrade - Questions

That was my first option but I could never find speakers that would fit into the dash the same brand as the components themselves. It seems like the frequency rating of the crossover and speakers are compatible. I also have a limited amount of power to work with.

Looking online they do have kicker 3.5 dash speakers but they run at 30 rms which would put me at 105 rms in total. Do you think that's fine for the amp to push?

Re: New audio system upgrade - Questions

To answer your question, you would be fine at 105W. I'm running the PDX4.100 (100x4 RMS) that's pushing 6 3/4" Type R's in the rear that RMS at 100W and then the Type R 6.5" components in the front that have an RMS of 110W. Everything meshes just great. Only other option from alpine is the PDX4.150 of the same generation but I don't blast my stereo all over the place so having that much more power wasn't really a requirement or even close to necessary.

Another suggestion I can make is instead of doing the 3.5 up front, just mount the tweet from a set of components up in that spot. I built my own bracket and installed the 1" tweeters up there with the 6.5 in the door. I figured that if they were installing a component system in the car (3.5 Dash, 6x9 door) then I could replace with new components without the acoustics of the vehicle getting screwy.

Again, just my two pennies...

Re: New audio system upgrade - Questions

Thanks for your advice,i just would really hate to loose the frequencies that the 3.5 produces. Apparently i read online that with the crossover the amount of ohms does not change because they are not wired in series or parallel. So if all 3 speakers are 4 ohms that's how much the amp would run at. Will check into some other threebway crossovers, maybe better name brands.

Can't wait till it's done

Re: New audio system upgrade - Questions

You technically wouldn't lose the frequencies, there would just be a different crossover location. What would be cut out of the 3.5's would then be coming out of the doors instead.

After testing the sound with my initial wiring setup, I only had the lows from the original crossover system going through my door speakers. There was hardly any sound that was coming out of them, it was all going through the dash speakers. Once I sent a better signal to the front (full range signal, let the Alpine crossovers figure it out), it made the sound stage a lot more balanced.

Either way you're going to get better sound out of the system. Are you planning on upgrading the rear speakers too? My one suggestion was going to be to look into adding a sub since the aftermarket speakers are really designed as highs and mids, unlike stock speakers that have to hit the full range. My speakers sound great, super loud, but I'm really lacking on the low end right now.

Side note, how are you liking that Alpine deck? I've been eying that one for a while, did you find a good deal on it anywhere?

Re: New audio system upgrade - Questions

The alpine head unit is great I love it. Got mine off eBay for 600 shipped very quickly too. Navigation is great and very well integrated into your music. One thing I would recommend is to get the PAC bypass module to watch videos and access any settings which in motion. It's only 15 bucks. I also have the backup cam and really love the whole unit.

I currently have a subwoofer and for a 10 it really pumps especially from all the extra power I have. No more lights dimming and a noticeable power improvement after adding second battery. Also can leave the car sitting for 3 months and start it no problem .

For the back speakers I was thinking to stick with kicker and just get the components ( woofer and tweeter) but get a set Closer to the 100 watts. With my stock setup I can get hardly any highs back there.

Sub is Rockford Fosgate p2 with alpine mrp500 sounds better and louder then people with big/ more subs. Mainly due to the power I have.
