Well I did it and it actually works!
I used a Transcend 32GB CompactFlash Card 400x
($30) on an Ultra IDE to Compact Flash Adapter for 44-pin 2.5-Inch HDD
($16). I downloaded a 30GB Mygig disk image ($38) for my REW and followed the instructions on the site for cloning the image to the "disk". It was actually easier than it seemed.
Definitely the way to go if you have a failing disk.
