Sound insulation and installation

Hi guys and girls,

I am looking for some information and input on sound insulation. After having installed an aftermarket muffler, I am in need of reducing the noise inside the cabin. I get a fair amount of drone, which my young daughter does not need to endure. So this gives me a great excuse to spend more money on the Jeep

I have already found several products, including Dynamat, FatMat and GTmat, which should help me alleviate the drone. By the way, GTmat had a free 10 sqft sample give-away, which should be arriving on the doorstep soon.

Now to the question part. Where would be the easiest place to install this material? I do not want to spend a whole day tearing down the interior of the Jeep, so I am looking for easy to access spots where the material could work. The most obvious spot is right over the rear wheels to reduce exhaust noise from the exhaust, but also road noise from the tires. Does anyone have any experience with a similar project and if so, how and where did you install similar products? Also, what were your end results?

Thanks everyone!!

Re: Sound insulation and installation

I would start with the trunk floor and rear hatch door. Those are going to be some of your easier spots to access.
With my experience with Sound deadening, i've done several big projects at work and a few for myself.
I used a product called EDead. Stuff was great to work with and worked very well.

Re: Sound insulation and installation

what areas on the WK are recommended to really install some insulation? say you did just the doors? or just the rear?

Re: Sound insulation and installation

Anyone try this stuff?

United Plastics Corporation - Plastic Profile Extrusions, Flexible Sheet

They sell it at Home Depot. It's been used in the auto industry for years.

Re: Sound insulation and installation

@parox: According to the manufacturers of these sound insulating products, it is recommended to install the material on the bare sheet metal. If their promises hold true, this will supposedly reduce vibration and noise transfer. I would start with those areas that JM recommended, which are the larger surfaces and where the noise is at its highest decibel.

@Yadkin: That looks pretty interesting and perhaps a bit cheaper than the specialized manufacturers (Dynamat, Fatmat etc.). I will give it a try should the 10 sq ft samlple not be enough to reduce my noise levels. I have been looing for something like that, so thank you very much for the input, Yadkin!!

My original question was more focused on those who actually have torn into the '05-'10 GC and done this before. I read a few places that Jeep utilizes small retaining clips to help fasten the interior. It is recommended to replace the clips every time the interior is being removed in order not to compromise fit and attachment. After looking at the price for those retaining clips at the local dealer, I realized the cost of tearing down all 4 doors and the hatchback would cost more in retainer clips than the insulation material itself. Thats why I was looking for answers as to where to install this sound insulating material without having to spend alot of money in other parts or spend hours tearing the interior out of the vehicle.

Re: Sound insulation and installation

If you are talking about plastic push pins you can order those online from generic suppliers very cheaply. Lowes, Ace or True Value also carry them in limited sizes. They are sized to the hole in the sheet metal. Long ago I bought a few dozen of several sizes and use them whenever I work on any of my cars.

Re: Sound insulation and installation

Thanks Yadkin! I will stop by the local store and pick some up before starting this project. If anyone is interested, I would be happy to post the results once I get done so that forum members have a point of reference in case they consider doing the same thing to their vehicles.

I would definitely appreciate that. I have two VERY annoying rattles coming from the rear. One's in the very back right of the roof by the lift gate window and another is on the rear left somewhere and I'd like to stop them as soon as possible because they are driving me crazy! So if you could let us know about your experience tearing out the back end and any tips you could give us, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Re: Sound insulation and installation

jjt250, I will do my best to take pics of the install and post any issues or obstacles I may come across. The free sample from GTMat is not due to arrive until after New Years, so it'll be a few days before I can get the install done.
Have you checked to see if the rattle is due to the interior not being completely snug? Maybe a few of those retaining clips mentioned earlier could be the culprit in your case? Let me know if there is anything I can do to help!

Re: Sound insulation and installation

Thank you, I really appreciate the help. I'm gonna get back there this weekend and see what I can find. There's two distinct rattles and I feel like they've gotten worse recently. If I get around to tearing out the rear end first, I'll be happy to help you, as well!
