Question Want to upgrade from 05 nav unit to aftermarket. Help needed!

Hey guys,
My wife has a 2005 GC Limited,5.7, Factory Navigation (rec unit I believe it is referred as?). Boston Acoustics sound system,Has the u connect on rear view mirror, steering wheel controls, built in 6 disc changer.

Anyhow, she is sick of not being able to plug her phone in to the radio for music, or be able to charge her phone without having cig lighter adapters strung across console,no blue tooth...etc..etc..

In my truck I installed an aftermarket 2 din touch screen unit and she wants the same thing in her Jeep.

I already have my sights set on what unit I would like to get but I have some technical questions I am hoping to get some answers for that I can't seem to find clear answers for anywhere else.

What all is needed for this install?!?. ( I don't care about losing the uconnect feature. ) I would like to retain steering wheel controls.

#1. What mounting kit is required to install a 2-din unit into the factory nav unit dash opening?

#2. what steering wheel integration kit would be required to maintain steering wheel button functionality?.

#3. What Wire harness do I need?

I have heard mixed opinions on what wire harness is needed. Some places look like it takes a $15-$20 harness. Other places I have seen upwards of $130.00 due to having something to do with nav unit/ boston acoustic "BA" factory amplified sound system requires a different harness. something to do with "data transfer" and something about the instrument clusters information display and memory seats and door chimes and things of that nature all being intertwined through this harness.???

The entire thing is a confusing mess. On my truck I bought a head unit,$10 harness, $15 mounting kit,and I had it installed a half hour later. This Jeep however sounds like its going to be a bit trickier to deal with lol.

Sorry for the long winded post everyone. All help is appreciated and detailed info and links and walk through's/explanations etc...etc.. would be much appreciated!. Thank you in advance!.

Head over to www.crutchfield.com - input your Jeep on their web site and it will show you everything that will fit it. Crutchfield is a little more expensive than other places, but if you're facing a tricky installation the few extra $$ will be well worth it as they provide the installation kit and wiring harness you'll need at no extra charge; full detailed installation instructions for your specific vehicle; and lifetime support. (Their tech support is some of the best I've ever come across in any industry.)

I already tried there. they have options for nav with no BA. standard with no BA and standard WITH BA. but not NAV AND BA.

Like I said....its proving to be tricky to track down the exact info that pertains to what is needed exactly for this setup.

If you were to call Crutchfield and talk to them I am positive that they can and will assist you, Their customer service and support is top notch. Just explain everyting and they will assist you with any and all problems that arise.

Re: Want to upgrade from 05 nav unit to aftermarket. Help needed!

I don't think it was that complicated.

PAC SWI-RC - I believe that's the unit I used to get the steering wheel controls working.

The fit kit is pretty straight forward. There are double din fit kits on eBay that come with a harness. I had a shop install mine but was present for the entire installation. The only things that they had to "splice" was the rear camera cable. I did my own splice for the satellite radio antenna by running a wire to the back of the jeep and capturing the cable there.... the antenna runs into part of the satellite system back there.

You'll lose some functionality, the NAV unit does have integration with the rest of the car (for reminders etc), and uConnect, and the microphone in the HomeLink mirror. But bluetooth, and newer stereo features will make up for all of that.

Re: Want to upgrade from 05 nav unit to aftermarket. Help needed!

I called crutchfield and the guy I spoke to was of no help. It sounded like the information he had available to him was the same information on the website.

I don't care about losing the uconnect features in the mirror...That is not an issue. The issue is that I have been told that with arise with the jeeps in dash information center/factory amplifiers etc...etc...

Just looking for someone with my exact setup that has done the swap that can speak on what exactly was used and what exact results were achieved.

I don't want to go drop $600 on headunit and installation equipment just to find that I did not get the correct stuff or I got items that wee not needed and were overkill.

And would like to know if it is even worth my time to do.

Re: Want to upgrade from 05 nav unit to aftermarket. Help needed!

I'm confused... I told you the part I used to keep my steering wheel controls, and the loss of the car information on the NAV unit is immaterial Hopefully, you can keep records to remind you when to perform certain services. I always found the NAV reminders to be annoying... *ding* rotate your tires..

The factory amplifiers will continue to work as they have... steering wheel controls work with the right integration. I'll double check the part I used to bridge the gap... butI'm 99 percent certain that's it.

Other than that, what else is there? Pick a head unit, get the steering wheel controls controller... wire it up.

Re: Want to upgrade from 05 nav unit to aftermarket. Help needed!

Im not sure if you have the exact same setup as I do?. The issues I am talking about happened of the exact setup I am talking about. Something to do with this setup causing all sorts of issues. factory nav unit with the B/A system. I was told that issues arise with the information center ( I am not talking about reminders on the nav itself....I am talking about the information center in the gauge cluster) was also told there was issues with dome lights/door chimes/draining battery...etc...etc... crutchfield showed online and said on phone that they offer the harness kit for nav, standard and standard B/A.. but NOT for NAV B/A. that seems to be the issue with most places is finding one that supports nav B/A. yes I am sure I could figure it out if I just ran off and bought every harness I have been told to buy by folks ( id have about 5 different harness's by this point). but id rather not. SO if anyone has any experience on this exact setup and can tell me for certain what is needed to avoid the issues I have have seen mentioned on multiple forums. I would appreciate it. Thanks

Re: Want to upgrade from 05 nav unit to aftermarket. Help needed!

What changed between 2005 and 2007 with regards to the sound system? I have my Jeep stated in my sig... 2007 WK Overland.

Boston Acoustics Premium Sound System. Now with a Sony XAV-701HD tuner in it.

I could keep telling you it's fine... but for some reason, they did something very crazy in 2005 to the WK B/A sound system that is found in no other years... and if you change it.... your jeep will turn into a pumpkin.

REC navigation unit... boston acoustics "premium" sound system...

If you do the work yourself, you can always roll the original navigation unit back in. You're over thinking it. Stop stalling, start installing. Good luck!

Re: Want to upgrade from 05 nav unit to aftermarket. Help needed!

No reason for snide comments. Simple fact is i'd rather avoid the hassle of purchasing over $700 worth of stuff just to run into issues and have to deal with returning items. And a lot of electronics the policies void refunds once opened/installed. And or require return shipping costs/restocking fees which would cost me even more money. I don't have a money tree in my back yard and I don't have all the free time in the world to dink around with parts that do not end up working for my particular setup.

I am not "stalling" I am being financially cautious . If you were clueless about the matter and the engine in your jeep needed replaced and someone told you a 5.3l Chevy is what goes in it would you jump out and purchase one and hope for it to work?. Or would you gather research and speak to multiple people who have did it all themselves and can give you a honest educated answer. And THEN base your purchase decision off of that?. That's what I thought. I'm not saying you don't know better if that situation were to come about. Just an example.

Again, thanks for the info but I'm looking for more people who can back the story up before I go out spending money on things. Because as It stands I have been told to buy atleast 5 different harness by different people across different forums and crutch field themselves couldn't even give me a straight answer. So I'm a little lost as to what exactly is needed for my exact setup. Again, thanks for the input... I'll keep it in mind. Right now just looking for anyone else who has also done the install...

OK, I just took mine apart and replaced the "fit kit" with the Scorpion. I liked the look of this better than the one I originally purchased. Here's what I found behind the dash... Two blue boxes with the following labels and a link to the fit kit I used.
