05 WK Hemi rebuild...looking for vids or blogs

My father, tried to go camping about a week ago. (He usually only uses the WK for pulling a trailer. So it is kitted out for towing, aka brakes, air intake, exhaust, basically everything you would want) He pulls into the gas station with the trailer, fills up and when he goes to start it. Big plumes of white blue smoke come pouring out of the exhaust. He is able to make it home, but he said it idling very rough with still lots of smoke. He took it today to a local trusted mechanic who told us that Cylinder #8 dropped a valve seat and probable destroyed the piston top.
We are pretty well mechanically inclined, have rebuilt 2 previous Jeep engines (I-4 and an I-6), but a HEMI is something completely different. We have the Chilton book or something very similar. As well as a engine picker and engine stand. So we have the tools available. What I am looking for is either a video series or a blog someone doing something similar. I am trying to use my google-fu, but need a little help. I was wondering if anyone on here has come across anything similar?

Re: 05 WK Hemi rebuild...looking for vids or blogs

Sorry to hear about your trouble. This is certainly not normal, but is fairly common, especially with early Hemi's. What year Hemi are we talking about? As your mechanic said, it drops a valve seat and destroys the top of the piston, and probably scores the cylinder wall.

If you've done engines before, the Hemi is no big mystery. It's actually more sophisticated, and runs closer tolerances than 60's-90's engines, but is no more difficult than your I-6's. All you should need is all the proper clearances.....ring end gap, bearing clearances, etc., along with the torque specs. If he plans to keep it, I'd for sure go with forged pistons. If he uses it for towing, you might consider better heads and advancing the stock cam. I advanced my aftermarket cams (4 degrees advance ground into them from the factory) on both my Hemi vehicles ....2 degress on the WK and 6 degress on my LX. So I am advanced a total of 6 degrees on the WK and 10 degrees on the LX. This moves the engine torque/hp range to lower RPM's, making it better for towing. Overall, it's much better in the RPM ranges you normally run at. You should also do some sort of good header (I had mine custom built), either SRT's, customs, or ??? Do a search of my screen name and you'll see what I did and also when I compared the stock WK log manifolds with the stock LX log manifolds, which are easily interchangeable, but will require head pipe modification. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Edit: Here's a thread that'll give you some ideas: Headers for my 5.7 Hemi If you want to see pix of the differences between the stock WK logs vs. the stock LX logs, let me know and I'll post them up.

Re: 05 WK Hemi rebuild...looking for vids or blogs

Thanks for all the useful info about the engines. Decided to have a mechanic rebuild it. Then we are going to sell it as he purchased a "dedicated" towing vehicle for it. My father won't be leaving the Jeep family, he still has his 92 Jeep Comanche to play with.
