I searched the site for this and saw some differing opinions regarding the removal/repair of the front drive shaft (D/S). Some said the D/S could be removed without the x-member removed, that was not the case for me. It hit the exhaust on the front side and the transfer case in the rear. My boot on the CV Joint side (transfer case) tore and eventually began to fail. In the beginning stages of failure, I heard a hum/drone from 1800-2200 rpm in every gear. Not much later I began to hear the typical click from a failing CV joint. So I purchased the CV Joint repair kit from Amazon, about $85 shipped, and went after it. It is a very simple job. I put the front end in the air and left the rear tires on the ground, I'll explain why later. My WK has rock rails, which is a great spot for jack stands, I used a jack to support the transmission and removed the cross member (ten 16mm bolts). The front universal has four 15mm bolts and the rear CV has six 8mm bolts, I loosened the ones I could get to, then switched the x-fer case to Neutral, back under the jeep and rotated the D/S to reach the other bolts, again back in the Jeep to engage the x-fer case and loosen the final bolts. The parts came with instructions, tap the outer cap off with hammer and screw driver, remove the snap ring and everything slides off. I did not trust the new bolts that the kit came with, so I used the factory 8mm. Everything else looked very good and fit as it should, it even came with the grease. I have seen the D/S with CV's on both ends and like mine with Universal and CV. Hope this helps.
