i'm trying to learn a bit about vehicle diagnostics etc. i own a 2005 GC ltd edition and i've read a lot of threads discussing obd-ii codes. but i've also read threads where people say the 2005-2010 GC's use the CAN Bus data system. i thought obd-ii was a different system to CAN?

could someone explain the basics to a noob? :)

thanks in advance

OBD-2 is the standard by which diagnostic codes are recognized and sent to the PCM for storage and availble at the connector under your driver's side dash. There are standard Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) used by the automakers. Then each mfgr can set a group of its own set of DTC's.

CAN bus is the computer "wireway" that sends the signals, like a network cable for your PC.

Here's a place to start reading:
http://www.wkjeeps.com/trouble_codes.htm
to help you understand OBD-2 and DTC's for your Heep. Do a Google search for CAN bus.

my mate at work has a vw golf and he uses a vag-com cable to connect his laptop to the car. he can then tweak very settings i.e. the power steering strength, alarm preferences, and view diagnostic info and clear warning lights etc etc

does something similar exist for the wk's?

Probably something like the Predator or Diablosport. I only monitor mine as a diagnostic aid; no tuning changes so I am not able to recommend a particular brand / model.

I have the VAG-COM cable and soft which is normally compatible with other brands than Volkswagen, I tryied to connect it onto my WH without any success; the network protocole used by Jeep isn't supported by VAG-Com.

It seems that some interfaces are compatible with the LLC Techauthority site for making modification but I couldn't find any information before purchasing an interface.
