Any auto store or Sears or harbour freight its just a socket 14 or 15 mm and the inside needs to have 12 bends in it instead of 6. It worked for me and a few others but the correct tool is an e torx socket and must be special ordered

Re: Finally got rid of suspension clunk

Hey all,

I installed the RC 2" suspension lift on my 2005 WK 3.7L and almost immediately had the clunk sound on the left front. First you need to move the oil filter splash guard out of the way by removing the two bolts holding it in place (used a 13 mm socket with extension). Used a Craftsman 15 mm 12 pt short socket and was able to make a 1/4 turn adjustment on the yoke nut.

Unfortunately this adjustment made no difference in the clunk sound. I primarily noticed that it would happen when hitting a pot hole or any bump in the road. I also noticed that I could reproduce the sound when I turned the steering wheel back and forth rather rapidly (while parked). So I had my son come out and repeat that steering motion while I took a closer look under the wheel well.

I seem to have pin pointed it to the upper control arm connection points. I think it is probably where the UCA attaches to the top of the knuckle. Maybe the bumper at that point. Simply steering the wheel back and forth produces the knocking sound and it's almost like there is unwanted movement (jerky, jumpy, not sure how to describe it) where the UCA bolt and bumper attach to the top of the knuckle.

I'm going to look into it more tomorrow. Anyone else see the same thing? Check it out and report back. Hoping that I can just torque it down more and at a minimum replace that bolt and/or the bumper. Don't want to have to purchase another UCA assembly...

Pete

Ball joint. I have the same issue. Sometimes the clunk goes away. It's just bc the angles are stressed a little.

Re: Finally got rid of suspension clunk

tfranzone - is there anything that can be done at the ball joint? Are you just living with it? The fact that I could visually witness the jerky movement makes me nervous. I don't want to have it fail while driving.

My clunk has never just gone away so I'm nervous that the stress over time will contribute to eventual failure...

Well I think the factory ball joints can actually be replaced. So have someone take a look and if its that just replace it. Now in terms of mine, I don't really have visible shaking like yours so it could be something else altogether for you. But my guesses are either ball joint or other culprits people have pinpointed were sway bar bushings. They tend to go quick on the WKs Good luck

Re: Finally got rid of suspension clunk

Hey everyone, I know there are a few threads on the horrid suspension clunk after installing a lift. I had the same problem and had a look at the steering rack bolt option. Cutting the story short, I found that the wheel knuckle was hitting the strut lower mount cup at full extension when going over a speed bump (when travelling down the bump). another position of 'hitting' was the UCA itself hitting the bracket that it is attached to.

After installing the JBA UCA for lifted Jeeps, the clunk completely disappeared, as there is more clearance between the strut and the knuckle.

I will post some pics next time I have it on the hoist to show before and after compared to the stock UCA.

Lets just say it wasn't unnoticeable on my Credit card bill ($472.90), especially when you include the cost of shipping it out to Dubai (an extra $104.32 on the bill)!

That is what I call the 'hidden' costs of lifting a Jeep, there are things that are ideal to do eventually. It is in the end complete peace of mind, and clearly a very solid product that is made specifically for the lifted application. It will also better support the swap to OME lift eventually.

The justification to the wife: it is all still cheaper than rolling in a brand new WK2 when considering depreciation costs, insurance premiums etc etc

Just got my Rocky-Road Outfitters UCL in the mail today. 2" OME lift and clunk is there. With the front of the jeep jacked up i was able to jiggle my wheel and saw a ton of play in the upper ball joint. Ill let you guys know if the UCAs help the clunk issue.

Re: Finally got rid of suspension clunk

I have a similar problem to the one originally posted in this thread... Lifted wk (old man emu 2.5") Clunk when turning right; except after the clunk my steering wheel is out of alignment. After turning back to the left, or stopping hard while driving straight ahead I get the same clunk and the steering wheel goes back into alignment.

I had firestone tighten the steering column bolt while also doing a front end alignment. The problem got a little better but still happens. I'm thinking its the rack, and time for a new one? Did anyone else have the steering wheel slip?
